MLA

Revised 5/13/2008

Database name:  MLA
Short database name:  MLAB
Available on: FirstSearch Test Server and Production Server

Why select this database?

The MLA International Bibliography indexes critical materials on literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore. The database provides access to some one million citations from over 4,000 journals and series published worldwide, as well as books, essay collections, working papers, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies.

Now includes the MLA Directory of Periodicals (DoP), which provides full information on more than 4,000 journals and series that are indexed in the MLA International Bibliography database. Users can access DoP records by searching the indexes as indicated in the Indexes table. Administrators can also set up a direct link from an MLA bibliographic record to a DoP record as instructed in the Notes for Creating Links.

Subjects included
folklore language
linguistics literature

Coverage/update frequency

Covers 1926 to the present.
Updated 9 times per year.
The Directory of Periodicals is updated every six months.

Evaluative content information in web sites:
OCLC-created URLs contained in 856/u fields in full MARC syntax and under the label "Access:" in full SUTRS syntax will allow internet-based access to evaluative content (cover art, summaries, excerpts, author information, etc.) These URLs can be cut and pasted, or programatically entered, into any browser supported by FirstSearch in order to gain access to the information. The URLs will time out after 7 days so if continued access is desired another search to receive an updated URL will need to be executed. The 856/i field is the indicator for information on the URL; because not all 856/u fields are additional evaluative content, the 856/i should be checked to be certain the 856/u is truly an OCLC-sourced link. The 856/i field contains instructions regarding the URL.

Notes for the subject phrase indexes (de=,  su=)

Each portion of the subject heading (e.g., subheading in 908/a-z) will be handled as a distinct phrase search.  The suggested strategy in searching for records that contain those subheadings is to and those terms together.

Example:  650 #a English Literature #x Short Story is searched by entering:

english literature and short story.

If:

Use attribute:

de= 5650
su= 21

Notes for creating links between bibliographic and periodical records

This is how links are created in the web version:

For article display type, the link is based on the existence of the 773/p tag. If it exists, it is used to search the Periodical Title Phrase index (PZ=) to pull up the periodical record (for journals).
For book display type, the link is based on the existence of the 905/g tag. If it exists, it is used to search the Periodical Title Phrase index (PZ=) to pull up the periodical record (for series).

Indexes

What follows is a list of FirstSearch indexes and the combination of USE and STRUCTURE attributes that can be used to access them.

  1. For any FirstSearch label where multiple USE attributes are listed all the attributes will provide the exact same search result sets.
  2. Any USE attribute that is not marked as a restrictor is available via the SCAN service.
  3. Restrictors are specially implemented indexes and are not available for scanning. Terms for these must be ANDed with other terms to limit the size of the result set. See the table provided for each restrictor to determine valid terms and their associated meaning.

FirstSearch Indexes and USE and STRUCTURE attributes used to access them. These are grouped by the type of record retrieved.
