Indexes
What follows is a list of FirstSearch indexes and the combination of USE and STRUCTURE
attributes that can be used to access them.
- For any FirstSearch label where multiple USE attributes are listed all the attributes will provide the exact same search result sets.
- Any USE attribute that is not marked as a restrictor is available via the SCAN service.
- Restrictors are specially implemented indexes and are not available for scanning. Terms
for these must be ANDed with other terms to limit the size of the result set. See the
table provided for each restrictor to determine valid terms and their associated meaning.
FirstSearch Indexes and USE and STRUCTURE attributes used to access them. These
are grouped by the type of record retrieved.

Searching Tips
Access Method
The characters between the punctuation in the URL are the "words" that are searched for. For example, http://www.oclc.org is searched by the "words" www, oclc, and org. The most distinct term in the string is the most useful on which to search. The "http" or "https" is not indexed.

Language Index
The Language index uses the three-letter codes for languages found in the OCLC Marc Code Lists (ISBN 1-55653-169-9). The language index also can be searched using the two-character ISO codes for languages. The English translations of these codes are also searchable. Note that the only precise search term is the three-letter code. All other terms may group language codes together. For example, English as a word search brings together Modern English, Old English, and Creole or Pidgin English.
Subject Indexes
The types of data have been broken down to allow specific searches, such as Geographic Coverage (58) and Genre (5655). The Descriptor search (5650) includes only topical information. The Subject index (21) contains topical and non-topical information, such as names, chronology, geography, and other subheadings.
Subject Phrase indexes
Each portion of the subject heading (e.g., subheading in 650/a,x,y,z) will be handled as a distinct phrase search. The suggested strategy in searching for records that contain those subheadings is to AND those terms together. The exception to this is the Subject All Phrase index (use attribute 21; completeness attribute 3). In that index all the subheadings in the field are indexed as one phrase.
Example Subject Phrase: 610 $a Kirkstall Abbey $v Pictorial works is searched by entering: kirkstall abbey AND pictorial works.
Example Subject All Phrase: 610 $a Kirkstall Abbey $v Pictorial works is searched by entering: "kirkstall abbey pictorial works".
Year Indexes
There are three different year indexes in Hand Press Book. Year index (31) is the first year given in the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data 008 date fields; this is the publication date. Year 2 index (5031) is the second date field in the 008. The year 2 index contains the ending year of a series, the original year of a reprinted work, and other specific year information. Imprint Year index (6030) is information from the 260/c,g (publication field) in the MARC record.
Using limiters: You can limit searches by Cataloging Source (6119), Document Type Phrase (1001), Language Phrase (54), and Year (31).
