Cataloging Efficiencies that Make a Difference On January 23, 2012, OCLC members convened at Cataloging Efficiencies that Make a Difference as part of their ALA Midwinter experience in Dallas, Texas. Participants learned about cataloging efficiencies and best practices that members have shared during several meetings that have taken place around the U.S. over the past several months. Speakers included Sarah Haight Sanabria, Electronic Resources Cataloger, Southern Methodist University, and Susan A. Massey, Head of Discovery Enhancement, University of North Florida, who provided participants with perspectives on cataloging ebooks and more. David Whitehair, OCLC Senior Product Manager, and Chris Martire, Director, OCLC Member Services, also shared the latest updates in cataloging efficiencies from the OCLC cooperative.

Daphne Kouretas, OCLC Member Services Consultant, and Bruce Crocco, Vice President, Library Services for the Americas, OCLC, welcomed more than 70 participants to OCLC’s headquarters in Dublin, OH, for Good Practices for Great Outcomes: Cataloging Efficiencies that Make a Difference on October 21, 2011. The event featured Ted Fons, Director, WorldCat Global Metadata Network, OCLC, who presented, “Our WorldCat: Working Harder, Working Better.” He was followed by David Whitehair, Senior Product Manager, OCLC, who discussed, “Tech Services Workflows: Trends and Good Practices.” This event also featured speakers from our member community, including Susan Banoun, Head, Electronic Resources Department, University of Cincinnati, Morag Boyd, Head of Special Collections Cataloging, The Ohio State University Libraries, and Pam Matthews, Acquisitions Manager, Cuyahoga County Public Library. Beverly Cain, Agency Director and State Librarian at the State Library of Ohio also provided an insightful presentation on current trends and the future direction of libraries to close this event.

Update on Controlling Headings in WorldCat and Connexion Changes
Becky Dean, OCLC discusses changes to controlling functionality in WorldCat along with changes to Connexion that apply to users of both the Web-based Connexion browser interface and the Windows-based Connexion client interface. The changes covered include those that support automatic date expansion for personal names, reduce unexpected automatic subfield flips, and resolve known problems in controlling. Information about Connexion changes related to the OCLC-MARC Bibliographic, Authority and Holdings Formats Update 2011 and upcoming controlling efforts in WorldCat, is also provided. Good Practices for Great Outcomes: Cataloging Efficiencies that Make a Difference
Over the past eight months, OCLC Member Services staff have been traveling around the U.S. to hear how librarians have faced the challenge to streamline cataloging at a time of reduced budgets and staff. These discussions have provided a great opportunity for all to learn, debate, and exchange practical tips on how to become more efficient—from defining "good enough" cataloging to collaborating on improved workflows, to sharing the latest on RDA and WorldCat quality. In this webinar, two academic librarians shared their experiences of reviewing and revising tech services workflows, and cataloging e-books. We also discussed the key trends and strategies provided by the hundreds of library staff who have contributed to the Good Practices for Great Outcomes series so far, and ended with a discussion of where we go from here.
