Roger H. Thompson, Ph.D.

Consulting Software Engineer

Roger's current area of research is knowledge organization. In this area he is constructing prototype systems to leverage the power of human and machine constructed knowledge organization schemes to find desired information sources. These prototypes arise from the intersection of graphic design, information retrieval, user interaction and knowledge representation. His most recent prototype is FictionFinder. This system enables seekers to search FRBRized "work" records in novel ways.

Since joining OCLC Research in 1990, Roger has worked on a variety of projects, including information retrieval from large text databases (TREC-1 conference), automatic database description construction from tagged text (FRED project) and automatic classification of web documents (Scorpion Porject). He was the primary designer and implementor of OCLC's WebDewey product.
