Dr. Ken Klingenstein, director of the Internet2 Middleware Initiative, will discuss the emergence of middleware infrastructures in higher education, and tools that allow consistent campus implementations to support inter-institutional collaborations. The talk will reference successes to date and identify interesting issues that the progress has uncovered, such as internationalization, managing privacy, accommodating large scale distributed learning communities, and the automation of intuitive concepts.

Dr. Klingenstein is renowned as a dynamic, candid, and thought-provoking speaker. He has been instrumental in moving along the Shibboleth project
< http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/ >, which develops architectures, policy structures and frameworks, practical technologies, and an open source implementation to support inter-institutional sharing of web resources subject to access controls.

Dr. Klingenstein has been a leader in national networking for the past 20 years. He is presently Project Director for the Internet2 Middleware Initiative, and in that role he coordinates activities intended to build an interoperable middleware infrastructure among Internet2 members that will glue next generation applications to network capacities and enable inter-institutional resource sharing. Ken is on loan to Internet2 from the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he was Director of Information Technology Services for 14 years, and continues to serve as Chief Technologist for the campus. Dr. Klingenstein received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley.
