Shared Print Collections Working Group

Note: This group dissolved in July 2008.

Mission

This working group was convened in December 2007 to advance the work originally begun under the auspices of the North American Storage Trust, to develop a common understanding of the inter-institutional agreements necessary to promote cost-effective management of legacy print collections. The committee was charged with compiling and synthesizing policy documentation for shared print collections so that common requirements might be identified. A sub-committee was formed to undertake a policy review exercise, which culminated in a report that was shared at the ALA Annual Conference in June 2008. Having fulfilled its charge, the committee was dissolved in July 2008. A final version of the policy review report is available:

Mode of operation:

The Shared Print working group met via teleconference on a six-week cycle. A collaborative project space (restricted to members of the working group) was used to support joint work and project tracking. Occasional physical meetings were scheduled in conjunction with major conferences.

Work accomplished:

  • Designed survey instrument to complete statistical profile of library storage facilities (February 2008); by mutual consent, this survey project was set aside in favor of a focused review of policy documents
  • Assembled library of shared / single / last copy policy documents for review; established policy review sub-committee; developed review template (March 2008)
  • Systematic review of 18 of sample policy documents by sub-committee members  (April 2008 – June 2008)
  • Draft report delivered at ALA Annual Conference, Pasadena CA (June 2008)
  • Final report circulated to RLG Partners (January 2009): Malpas, Constance. RLG Partnership Shared Print Collections Working Group Shared Print Policy Review Report. (.pdf: 161K/23 pp.)
