Uniting OCLC and RLG

In the early 1970s, three US universities and the New York Public Library created a consortium for research libraries, which incorporated in 1975 as The Research Libraries Group, Inc. (RLG). Over several decades, RLG grew to include an international array of virtually every type of cultural memory institution—universities, national libraries, archives, historical societies, museums—all with remarkable collections for research and learning.

On July 1, 2006, RLG combined with OCLC, forming a distinct group referred to as RLG Programs within the OCLC Programs and Research division. Former RLG services were migrated to OCLC, a process that was completed in September 2007. In July of 2009, OCLC Programs and Research consolidated further under the name of OCLC Research, and RLG Programs became known as the RLG Partnership. The OCLC Research division now consists of a unified staff of research scientist and program officers; our research scientists are devoted to understanding the challenges facing libraries, archives and museums in a rapidly changing, digital environment, and our program officers are dedicated to coordinating the collective efforts of the RLG Partnership.
