Alison Elliott

Alison is the Director of Content Services in the National Library of New Zealand, part of the Department of Internal Affairs. The focus of Content Services is on collection development, management and description as well as provision of bibliographic services nationwide. She has had responsibility for legal deposit for some time including the period in which it was extended to cover electronic publications both on and offline.

Alison has long had an interest in library systems and currently works with systems that support the National Library, systems for public libraries and a system that supports the provision of bibliographic and interlibrary loan systems nationwide. Most recently, Alison has been involved with the development and implementation of a system that supports the Library’s long-term digital preservation requirements.

The Library on behalf of the libraries of New Zealand entered into a partnering agreement with OCLC in 2008 that gave all New Zealand libraries access to OCLC WorldCat and use of OCLC bibliographic services. While the National Union Catalogue is still maintained in New Zealand, the holdings of New Zealand libraries are also represented in WorldCat.

Alison has an ongoing interest in standards, particularly bibliographic standards and has actively encouraged the adherence to internationally recognised standards in the Library’s work. She is currently working in a collaborative project that is developing a Māori Subject Headings List in Māori.

Alison holds a BA from Victoria University of Wellington and a Diploma from the New Zealand Library School.
