"Inaccessible Domain Materials"—A Cataloging
Standard
Knowing a wealth of materials in their library
collections remained uncataloged and unknown to researchers, in the
mid-1990s the RLG Art & Architecture Group appointed a working
group to explore what could be done to improve access to such
"inaccessible domain" materials. Based on a review of similar efforts,
the "InDoMat" Working Group proposed a new bibliographic standard to
help libraries catalog aggregations of unique research materials
comprising art catalogs, clippings, visual resources, architectural
records, and documents.
The recommendation went to the Program for Cooperative
Cataloging—a cooperative effort of the Library of Congress
and participants around the world to increase access to library
collections through timely, cost-effective cataloging that meets
agreed-on standards. In 1999-2000, with input from the ARLIS/NA
Cataloging Advisory Committee, the PCC's Standing Committee on
Standards adapted our members’ definition as the PCC BIBCO
Core Bibliographic Record for Collections.
