Explore the Role of Large Digital Text Aggregations in Scholarship and Research

Quick facts

Total projects: 1

Problem statement: The outputs of mass digitization partnerships are expected to exceed several million library-held titles by 2010. Little is yet known about the expectations that students, scholars, and teachers will bring to such collections. A collective effort is required to identify the core service requirements and the opportunities for collaborative sourcing of solutions.

Impact: Projects within this program are expected to create a shared understanding of the expectations that researchers and students bring to their interactions with the outputs of mass digitization (both as large, generic aggregations and as selected for local use by an individual or a community) and the requirements for making these collections fit for scholarly use.

Project

  • Investigate user expectations for scholarly use of the outputs of mass digitization
Related efforts and studies will be reviewed prior to consulting users and potential users to establish a common understanding of scholarly use cases and the core requirements for research services. The goal is to identify what is needed to support scholarly use of text aggregations. Scholars and researchers in various humanities and social science disciplines will be invited to describe their expectations and needs. Refined use cases will guide any further activity.
