Digitizing: Newspaper collectionsExperience you can count onSince the early 1990s, OCLC Preservation Service Centers staff members have managed newspaper digitization projects. To date, we have scanned and processed more than 2 million newspaper pages, including student, daily and weekly newspapers covering local, regional and national news. This experience, combined with our state-of-the-art facilities, has helped us become a leading provider of innovative newspaper digitization solutions. Providing complete solutionsOur experience is further enhanced by our project management expertise and ability to provide a complete solution. We will work closely with you, providing an integrated set of consulting, digitization and cataloging services tailored to specific project needs. We offer consolidated solutions, eliminating the need to use a patchwork approach with a number of different vendors. Meeting your specificationsWe scan newspapers directly using the original papers to capture images, or from your preservation microfilm—for example, United States Newspaper Project (USNP) legacy microfilm, which is a requirement of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). We also provide digital files that meet your specifications in terms of resolution, processing, organization, file naming, file format and delivery media. The CCS docWorks softwareAt OCLC, we use the docWORKS Newspaper Edition software. Developed by CCS (Content Conversion Specialists), a global company based in Germany, docWORKS is an intelligent software application that was developed based on NDNP specifications. It meets all current NDNP requirements. Once the newspapers are processed by docWORKS, the converted newspapers are exported in both METS/ALTO and PDF formats. They can then be transferred to a variety of content management systems, including OCLC’s CONTENTdm® Digital Collection Management Software. Manage your newspaper collectionsWe can provide a complete solution for your digital newspaper projects by loading the converted newspapers’ METS/ALTO and PDF formats into the CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software. CONTENTdm offers complete support for digitized historical newspapers.
