WorldCat.org enhancements in October 2009

This month’s enhancements include a new apply for a library card link, recent items breakouts, new Elsevier content, Goodreads reviews and the new WorldCat Page on Facebook.

Library info pages now show library card sign up link and recent lists breakouts

Two new features were added to WorldCat.org this month that enhance the usefulness of your library info page on the site: the "Apply for a library card" link and new breakout categories on lists of recently-added items.

The "Apply for a library card" link (circled) is drawn from your library's WorldCat Registry profile in the "Name and Location" section, and the Recent items list breakouts (highlighted) are automatically generated for you each month, from your previous month's WorldCat holdings.

Apply for a library card link
Once you add a link to your online library card sign-up form through the WorldCat Registry, now WorldCat.org will display it for your users. So anyone who finds your library through WorldCat can immediately become an online borrower.

Fiction/Juvenile breakouts on recent items lists
Your library's monthly auto-generated list of items recently added to WorldCat just got even better—now there are 4 separate sublists for fiction, nonfiction, juvenile and nonjuvenile materials. You can point to this page from blog posts, newsletters—anywhere you want to highlight new content for specific readers. (Note that the "All items" list has an RSS feed on it. Soon the breakout categories will have individual RSS feeds, too.)

See both of these enhancements in action from the Huntington Beach Public Library's "info" page on WorldCat.org

Elsevier ScienceDirect articles now on WorldCat.org

Elsevier metadata for SCOPUS and ScienceDirect collections from 2006 to the present have now been indexed in WorldCat.org search results. This article-level metadata joins similar content such as the GPO Monthly Catalog, ArticleFirst, Medline, ERIC and the British Library Inside Serials. The ScienceDirect content corresponds to 1,800 journals, 150 book series and more than 1.3 million records.

Goodreads reviews are in

WorldCat has now added Goodreads reviews to help users evaluate materials with fellow readers' comments. You'll find Goodreads reviews in the "Reviews" section alongside WorldCat, WeRead, and Amazon reviews.

Now you can link to WorldCat.org records from your xISBN results.

The xISBN Web service supplies ISBNs and other information associated with an individual intellectual work represented in WorldCat.
OCLC and South West Regional Library Service announce major collaboration using WorldCat Local in the United Kingdom

BIRMINGHAM, UK,7 October 2009 – OCLC and the South West Regional Library Service (SWRLS) today announced a collaboration that will initially see seven public library authorities in the South West of England using WorldCat Local as their shared end user discovery service in 2010.

Library authorities in Bournemouth, Bath & NE Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Plymouth are working with OCLC to implement a discovery interface that will enable users to search and place reservations on materials held across the South West region. The service is a replacement for Wisdom, formerly supplied by DS Ltd, now part of the Axiell Group. By adopting this approach, the libraries will also raise their profile on the Web by becoming visible in WorldCat.org, the Web destination for discovery of library resources.

Rob Froud OBE, Head of Cultural Service at Somerset County Council and Chairman of the SWRLS Management Board said of the announcement: “We opted to work with OCLC because we sought a service our library customers would view instantly as highly attractive and easy-to-use. Our library staff are also served by having a solution that is technically robust and simple to implement.” Asked whether he felt other libraries in the region might join at a later stage, Mr Froud said: “Other libraries have expressed an intention to join and it is our hope they will do so soon, but we are very happy with the initial roll-out as it is another demonstration that the model of collaborative working across public library authorities is thriving.”

The libraries, through their participation in UnityUK, are already regularly updating their bibliographic and holdings information, which OCLC then uploads to WorldCat. This facilitated records transfer has opened up the potential for them to utilise services built on the WorldCat platform, including WorldCat Local. The seven SWRLS libraries will have their own individualised Web discovery interface reflecting their libraries’ branding and holdings switched on. Each interface will also present real-time holdings information from the other participating libraries to quicken the time it takes for users to locate items of interest. Requests will then be managed by the libraries’ underlying management systems, in this case Axiell’s Galaxy and Talis Alto. Inter-library loan requests by SWRLS libraries are managed by UnityUK.

The decision by libraries in the South West to adopt WorldCat Local as a shared service comes at a time when public libraries across the country are joining up service provision. In September, the Society of Chief Librarians announced an initiative to allow members of a library to borrow books from any of 4000 libraries in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. And, as has been widely reported, the government is planning a national request service backed up by home delivery in an attempt to reinvigorate the public’s perception of libraries.

Visit the OCLC Web site for more information on WorldCat Local.

About SWRLS
South Western Regional Library Service was founded in 1937 as a charitable organisation, and exists to act as an advocate for, and to promote cooperation between, the libraries across all sectors in the South West. There are currently 56 members of SWRLS, consisting of public library authorities, academic and special libraries and around 25,000 interlibrary loan transactions are carried out annually between them. For further information see the website at www.swrls.org.uk.

About OCLC
Founded in 1967 and headquartered in Dublin, Ohio, OCLC is a nonprofit library service and research organization that has provided computer-based cataloging, reference, resource sharing, eContent, preservation, library management and Web services to 71,000 libraries in 112 countries and territories.
ABES to add French Sudoc records to WorldCat

PARIS,21 September 2009 – OCLC and ABES (l’Agence Bibliographique de l’Enseignement Supérieur), in France, have signed an agreement to load 9 million records from Système Universitaire de documentation (Sudoc), the cataloguing system for French academic libraries managed by ABES, into WorldCat, the largest global online resource for finding information in libraries. As a result of this agreement, collections of 110 participating Sudoc institutions that represent over 1,000 libraries will be visible to searchers worldwide through WorldCat.org.

The addition of Sudoc records in WorldCat, planned for the first quarter of 2010, will increase visibility of collections from the French academic world.

In addition to the valuable worldwide, online visibility of their records, participating in WorldCat brings the Sudoc libraries more benefits. "Thanks to their contribution, the libraries become OCLC members," says Raymond Bérard, director of the ABES, "and as such they can, for example, use the WorldCat API to develop their own specific applications. Further, as OCLC members, these Sudoc libraries can vote on a regional level in the OCLC governance structure."

"We are very pleased that ABES has agreed to contribute these records to WorldCat," says Rein van Charldorp, managing director of OCLC in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "OCLC has been working with ABES for more than 10 years now and this further extension of our cooperation is the logical next step. The worldwide library community will benefit significantly from the enrichment of WorldCat with the Sudoc titles."

The agreement to load Sudoc records into WorldCat follows that of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), which signed a similar agreement in June of this year. Since 2002, ABES has been cataloguing with Sudoc, which is based on OCLC's Central Bibliographic System (CBS). Loading CBS records into WorldCat makes possible the option for real-time updates from CBS into WorldCat, via SRU update, which is currently being used effectively for the Dutch union catalogue and the union catalogue of Australia.

With Sudoc records in the WorldCat database, these libraries are able to use other useful and efficient tools such as WorldCat Collection Analysis, which allows libraries to compare their collections with those of peer libraries. Visit the OCLC Web site to find more learn more about WorldCat.

About ABES
ABES (Agence Bibliographique de l'Enseignement Supérieur) is the agency in charge of Sudoc (Système Universitaire de documentation), the Library Union Catalogue for the academic, specialist and Higher Education in France. ABES was created in 1994 with the aim of implementing Sudoc, which was launched in 2001 and has proved very successful, representing in excess of 9 million records of 1,100 libraries and their 28 million holdings. ABES received over 34 million queries in 2008, which makes Sudoc a premier one-stop point for supporting teaching and research via a freely available integrated catalogue.

WorldCat Search API enhanced; Plans announced for WorldCat Basic API

The WorldCat Search API has been enhanced so that now developers can build apps that limit by an individual library's holding symbol, without authentication, at all service levels.

With this functionality update, the eligibility requirements for the WorldCat Search API have also been updated.

New applications for the service will require that the library contributes to WorldCat and subscribes to WorldCat on FirstSearch or maintains a WorldCat subscription.

All of the more than 200 current WorldCat Search API WSKeys will remain active through at least Sept. 1, 2010. Any future request, however, will need to meet these new eligibility requirements.

Dawn Hendricks, WorldCat Search API product manager, explains that "current WorldCat Search API users are encouraged to continue creating new apps and mashups with the service to provide additional value for their libraries."

A new API for all: WorldCat Basic
OCLC announces its plans to offer a simple API into WorldCat for anyone and everyone in the world to use, for noncommercial use. Called the WorldCat Basic API, it will provide a mashable access point for lightweight apps built by developers who may or may not have ties to the library community.

Planned for release later this year, the WorldCat Basic API will use OpenSearch technology and return feeds in Atom and RSS. Results include OCLC number links to WorldCat.org, ISBNs and formatted citations.

"We have been wanting to do a completely open API to WorldCat for a long time now," remarks Roy Tennant, one of the OCLC Developer Network founders. "I am eager to see it in action."

Developers everywhere are encouraged to exercise their creativity to create new mash-ups that make use of WorldCat data through the APIs and other WorldCat widgets.

OCLC Web Services continue to offer ways to connect people with knowledge through libraries, and for libraries to reap the benefits of library cooperation.

OCLC announces agreements in Europe to extend coverage in WorldCat

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA,25 August 2009 – OCLC today announced four new agreements have been signed with European national libraries and affiliated institutions which significantly increase the coverage of records in WorldCat and the visibility of libraries in WorldCat.org in the Europe and Middle East regions.

"These latest agreements in Denmark, Switzerland, Slovenia and Israel show that libraries from around the globe are responding very positively to the opportunity that WorldCat offers to streamline workflows and increase visibility in WorldCat.org, a global destination for libraries that surfaces to a worldwide community the collections they hold and the services they deliver," said Rein van Charldorp, Managing Director, OCLC Europe, Middle East and Africa.

In Denmark, OCLC and Dansk BibliotekCenter (DBC) have agreed to load the Danish National Union Catalogue (DanBib) with holdings into WorldCat. DBC is responsible for providing the Danish national digital infrastructure as well as managing its national union catalog. The agreement is the result of a year-long pilot coordinated with the Danish Agency for Libraries and Media (DALM), the governmental administrative and advisory body responsible for public and research libraries. The pilot took place with the participation of academic and public libraries from across Denmark and will add approximately 10 million Danish records to WorldCat. In addition, a connection between WorldCat.org and bibliotek.dk will be orchestrated. bibliotek.dk is a national service managed by DBC to enable Danish citizens to request and receive items from any library in Denmark, free-of-charge via the Web. Jens Thorhauge, Director General, Danish Agency for Libraries and Media, said of the agreement, "We feel that our valuable national service, bibliotek.dk, will benefit from increased site visits and requests as Danish users of WorldCat.org are directed to the service."

In Switzerland, OCLC and the Informationsverbund Deutschschweiz (IDS) have signed an agreement to load the records from five IDS consortia to WorldCat. IDS, which also includes the National Libraries of Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, will be loading approximately 10 million bibliographic records and 16 million holdings. IDS wants to increase visibility for the libraries of Switzerland through WorldCat.org as well as gain access to the 130 million records in WorldCat for cataloging purposes.

In Slovenia, OCLC has finalized an agreement to load 3 million records later this year with IZUM, an organization which represents the interests of over 380 academic, public and other libraries. The activities of IZUM are mainly engaged in the development and operation of the COBISS system and services (Co-operative Online Bibliographic System and Services), which represents the core of the library information system along with shared cataloging and many other library automation applications in Slovenia. IZUM also provides users in Slovenia with free access to a variety of other databases and services, including OCLC FirstSearch. Tomaž Seljak, Director of IZUM: "In Slovenia, we are interested in bibliographic data on published works of Slovenian authors being available in WorldCat, and also through WorldCat.org, COBISS.SI will become even more visible to Internet users."

In Israel, MALMAD, a consortium of over 30 academic institutions, has just secured as part of their OCLC cataloging subscription a complete retrospective batch load of holdings data into WorldCat, which will ensure that all holdings will be visible through OCLC Connexion, OCLC FirstSearch and WorldCat Resource Sharing. Dr. Sigal Scher, Director of the MALMAD Consortium, said "The academic libraries in Israel are looking forward to making their holdings more visible and accessible through membership in OCLC and WorldCat."

The timing of this announcement comes as the 75th IFLA General Conference and Assembly, which OCLC sponsors, takes place in Milan, Italy. Rein van Charldorp, OCLC Managing Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa said of the agreements, "At OCLC we are uniquely placed to help libraries operate at a network level, and realize even greater efficiencies and visibility on the Web. The scale and richness of WorldCat and WorldCat services is proving to be an increasingly attractive proposition for libraries in this region."
