WorldCat.org enhancements in June 2009

This month's enhancements see WorldCat Identities more incorporated into the site, updates to advanced search, more visible privacy settings and an invitation to WorldCat.org meetings at ALA in July.

WorldCat Identities now more integrated

If you've ever wanted to see all the works of a single writer, understand how a character related to other characters, or get a timeline on the publications surrounding a person, you're going to love the integration work that's just happened this month with WorldCat Identities.

Get to a WorldCat Identities page from the "Find more information about" drop-down in the Details section of a detailed record. Now you will stay within the WorldCat.org site navigation, look and feel.

WorldCat Identities pages show information about writers and characters such as genre, subject headings, audience level recommendations, associated subjects, links to biographical-type information and much, much more.

WorldCat Identities grew out of the VIAF project from OCLC Research and has quickly become a favorite of WorldCat searchers. Watch a YouTube video to hear how one OCLC staffer likes to play "Six degrees of Francis Bacon" with WorldCat Identities.

Advanced Search drop-down screenshotUpdates to Advanced Search

Advanced Search has been streamlined and updated in anticipation of the single-search access to your library's OCLC eContent on WorldCat.org, coming this summer.

There are now three dropdown boxes that contain index choices such as OCLC number (also called Accession Number), Author, ISBN, ISSN, Keyword, Title and Subject.

Privacy settings now easier to spot

WorldCat.org respects your privacy, and now it's even easier to tell at a glance which items you've marked as public or private. Individual items such as favorite libraries, lists and saved searches are now marked with a red circle to indicate private, or a blue parentheses for public. Make any privacy updates from your profile page by clicking on each area's summary section header.
