The Sonoma County Library in Santa Rosa, California has added a new collection to their digital image collection of historical images, powered by OCLC’s CONTENTdm Digital Collection Management Software.  Read the library’s news below.

Sonoma County Library, through their digital collection, the Sonoma Heritage Collections, seeks out, acquires and makes digitally accessible, materials in all formats to illuminate Sonoma County history and culture. The Sonoma Heritage Collection builds on the extensive collection of historical photographs gathered in the Library's History & Genealogy Library, Petaluma History Room and Sonoma County Wine Library, as well as archival collections located in the Sonoma County Archives. They have collaborated with a number of Sonoma County organizations to broaden their offerings. The Sonoma Heritage Collections includes a number of collections ranging from historical photographs to Sonoma County wine labels, and from architectural drawings to winemaker oral histories.

The latest addition to their collection is the Western Sonoma County Historical Society Collection. The rich history of Sebastopol, California and western Sonoma County is captured in a collection of nearly 7,000 images held by the West County Museum in Sebastopol. Among the many historical images from Sebastopol and western Sonoma County, find Luther Burbank and his Gold Ridge Experiment Farm, the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad, the local apple industry, and also hundreds of portraits, extensive architectural images (including those from Evelyn McClure's Sebastopol, California: History, Homes and People, 1855-1920) and snapshots of daily life in the area, dating back to the 1870s. Many images are paired with a Google StreetView image for a "then & now" experience; multiple photographs of some houses and other building can provide a different view of changes over time.

Bringing this collection into the Sonoma County Heritage Collections demonstrates the synergy of shared resources. For the library, the new virtual collection broadens the existing collections by filling in many gaps in holdings; for the Western Sonoma County Historical Society Collection, the existing Heritage Collections give additional context to their collection, and makes it visible to their members, the community and the world.
