Hagley Museum and Library enters the 100,000th record from the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 4 February 2010—A record, titled “New Haven, Connecticut,” from the Hagley Museum and Library, marked the 100,000th record entered into WorldCat using the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway. The record of an aerial photograph taken in 1940 is a part of the museum’s Dallin Aerial Survey Company Photographs digital collection and can be viewed at www.worldcat.org/oclc/476891282.

The WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway, introduced in July 2009, provides CONTENTdm users like the Hagley Museum and Library, with a Web-based, self-service tool to upload metadata for unique digital collections to WorldCat. Once records are uploaded, the digital collections of libraries, archives and other cultural heritage institutions receive unparalleled visibility through WorldCat and on the Web. Later in 2010, the Gateway's capabilities will be expanded to support all OAI-compliant repositories.

"Adding our digital content to WorldCat via the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway provides our users with another avenue to access Hagley's world-class collections on the history of business and industry. The Gateway is an intuitive tool that makes it feasible to move large sets of metadata from CONTENTdm into WorldCat," said Kevin Martin, Curator of Digital Collections at the Hagley Museum and Library located in Wilmington, Delaware.

OCLC and its member libraries are striving to develop WorldCat into the premier resource for the discovery of digital primary source and cultural heritage materials. The goal is to maximize the visibility and accessibility of the unique digital collections of libraries, museums and archives by providing infrastructure, services and support.

WorldCat is the world's largest database of bibliographic information built continuously by libraries around the world since 1971. Each record in the WorldCat database contains a description of a single item or work and a list of institutions that hold the item. The institutions share these records, using them to create local catalogs, arrange interlibrary loans and conduct reference work.

There are now more than 165 million records in WorldCat spanning five millennia of recorded knowledge. Like the knowledge it describes, WorldCat grows steadily. Every second, OCLC and its member institutions add seven records to WorldCat.
