From
Daniel Boivin, Director

Daniel Boivin, Director [photo] It is a great pleasure to share with you the very first issue of the OCLC Canada newsletter. OCLC Canada's number of users has grown from 60 to more than 625 Canadian libraries in just over 4 years, and it has become important for us to improve the communication with our users. We look forward to keeping you updated on the new developments, partnerships and initiatives that our non-profit Canadian cooperative is working on in our efforts to better serve Canadian libraries.

We are also happy to report that not only have the number of Canadian members and users grown, but the organization itself has grown. We now have more than 30 staff at OCLC Canada, including the staff from the OCLC Canada LTS division.
We hope that you enjoy this quarterly newsletter, and we welcome any questions, comments or suggestions that you would like to share.

A word from the Chair, OCLC Canada Advisory Council: Bernard Dumouchel, Director General CISTI and Member Council Delegate, OCLC

I am delighted to welcome you to this first issue of the OCLC Canada Newsletter. All of you are aware that OCLC Canada has enjoyed tremendous growth in membership under the leadership and drive of Daniel Boivin, Director. I believe it is important for OCLC Canada to communicate regularly with its members, as a true cooperative, to keep you informed of developments and provide a voice for our members to share their best practices.

OCLC is undergoing growth in membership with more and more non-US libraries joining as either as full members or users of services. Canada is no longer one of the few non-US countries participating more fully in OCLC's governance.

The recently completed governance study has provided a number of recommendations to improve the voice of members of this cooperative. As your representative for the past three years, I have seen the OCLC Users Council change to OCLC Members Council, reflecting the importance of upward feedback and consultation on decision making at OCLC. We have also established the OCLC Canada Advisory Council to ensure that our opinions are heard at the Members Council as well as to provide advice, counsel and recommendations to OCLC Canada in representing our needs to the larger cooperative. I hope you enjoy this Newsletter. Let us know what you think!
