Enhancements
Helping libraries manage electronic resources
The WorldCat Link Manager administration module has added many features designed to help libraries manage their electronic resources.
- Advanced Onix SOH support
With on-demand ONIX SOH output, WorldCat Link Manager libraries can export holding for use in other resource management services, such as the eSerials Holdings service. Administrators can now export their holdings data in Onix SOH format with the click of a button.
- Enhanced editing of dates in Title List Admin
The Title List Admin system allows local admins to overlay the dates on the records shown there. This will let an admin change the dates on any record without waiting for a complete KnowledgeBase update and without needing to make a local holdings record. There is also a Note field for single journal notes.
- Import and export records
Export holdings data in multiple formats. Import holdings data in ascii text, ISO-8859-1, or UTF-8 format for multiple language support. WorldCat Link Manager will work with the data you have.
- More logging tools
COUNTER compliant display of logging results available. Plus many other ways to view how your users are using (or not using) your resources. Logs can be downloaded for use in other analysis tools.
- PubMed LinkOut format holdings
A librarian can download the holdings for their library in PubMed's LinkOut format and send it to PubMed to set holdings. If desired, this will save the librarian from needing to configure an outside tool with PubMed.
- Results available in XML format
If a library vendor (or a developer at the local library) wishes to use Link Manager results or links in a different piece of software, this interface will allow them to easily retrieve any of the content from the regular end-user interface in XML format.
- Select records regardless of presence of ISSN
Records are now selectable without regard to the presence of an ISSN. This means that any record in an individually selectable package can be selected no matter what is contained within the actual record.
- Support for consortia and corporate libraries
Our multiple holdings-list feature allows libraries to transparently share jointly maintained serials lists, resulting in reduced duplication of effort.
- Title overlap analysis
Use the title overlap tool to find out which titles in that new package your institution already has. Maybe you don’t need to order it after all.
Refining the user experience
We are continually adding ways for WorldCat Link Manager to help users get the information they need.
- AutoSuggested added to search
The main search box has an autosuggest feature which will look up titles as the user types into the search box and provide them with a list of hits in the title list. This is off by default.
- Browsable local holdings
Local Holdings tables are now browsable using the Browse by Database button.
- eBooks appear in journal search results
Ebook results can now be displayed as part of a normal search mixed in with journal results. This is off by default.
- Enhanced support for eBooks
WorldCat Link Manager is no longer just for ejournals. The knowledgebase included with WorldCat Link Manager includes over 500,000 linking records for ebooks. Enhancements to WorldCat Link Manager’s browsing features enable users to browse publishers, packages, and ebooks. WorldCat Link Manager has had full ISBN-13 support for over a year. Records for ebooks/proceedings (or any electronic record!) can now be browsed and searched.
- ILL for all
Since we’ve mentioned ILL, we might mention that we’ve added a whole bunch of ILL options, including a customizable email request router.
- Immediate linking
Users want the best fulltext option immediately. WorldCat Link Manager’s intelligent auto-redirect is available so that users can be immediately sent to the best available service, as determined by the library. If you don’t have an item in your electronic collection- you can sent the user right to your Catalog or ILL service.
- ISBN is now a searchable field.
Users searching for ebook content will have a much higher chance of finding the record they need.
- More list navigation tweaks
We’ve added extended alphabet browse, so that, for example, when you browse to “A” you then see choices to browse to “Aa,” “Ab,” etc., and see how many titles there are in each of these sub-categories. Also, numeric page navigation now has “First” and “Last” options, so you can jump to either end of the results quickly.
WorldCat Link Manager’s intelligent Indexed navigation links show the partial text of the first title in the next page of results. Just hover over the navigation link. So users can skip those first 10 pages of results and not miss a thing.
- WorldCat Link Manager around the world
WorldCat Link Manager’s unparalleled support for all the world’s languages now extends to Japanese, Chinese and Arabic, with language specific features such as katakana and bopomofo search, stroke count ordering, and bidirectional text support. Users can easily switch between languages in seconds. English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, German and Bulgarian user interfaces are currently available.
