Americas Regional Council
Emerging Technologies Administrator, Nashville Public Library
Tricia Racke Bengel has been with the Nashville Public Library working as an Associate Director since 2008. In this capacity, she has overseen the cataloging, acquisitions, technology services and Main divisions and presently heads the Emerging Technologies department. While at NPL, Tricia has been the project lead for Limitless Libraries, grown the digital collections significantly and is actively implementing automation to reduce paperwork and transform libraries to meet the needs of 21st century readers. Previously, she spent four years at the Tennessee State Library and Archives, two as the Director for Technical Services and two overseeing the Tennessee Virtual Library. She began her library career at the age of 15 working as a page in her local public library. After finishing her MLS at the University of KY she moved to Syracuse NY to work for Gaylord Information systems installing and implementing their GALAXY and then Polaris library automation systems. At GIS she became the first librarian to ever work in their Research and Development department. But, her favorite job there was teaching the new programmers (many of whom barely spoke English and had never been in a public library) how American libraries work. Currently, Tricia also serves as the Past -President of Tenn-Share, a statewide library resource sharing agency that is responsible for spearheading initiatives such as lobbying the legislature to fund a virtual library and forming many collaborative partnerships such as statewide group purchases.
