Access to authority files

Search, edit and link headings to the LC Authority File

Connexion includes access to the Library of Congress Names and Subjects Authority Files so you can display, create, and maintain authoritative headings and view superseded versions of headings as part of the cataloging process.

From Connexion, you can:

  • Search by keyword, derived key, ISSN, and ISBN indexes, as well as browse phrase indexes that provide root and expanded results
  • View superseded versions of headings
  • Edit authority records
  • Link headings on bibliographic records to the associated authority records so the linked headings will be automatically updated in WorldCat if the authority record ever changes
  • Export records according to MARC21 specifications to your Integrated Library System
  • Save edited copies of records in the authority save file

NACO Libraries

Libraries participating in NACO, the name authority program component of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), can use the OCLC Authority File to create and edit records for contribution to the Library of Congress (LC) Name Authority File. OCLC sends new and edited record to LC seven days a week and receives records from LC six days a week. Through authorities features in Connexion, NACO libraries can:

  • Create authority records from a workform or an existing record
  • Create authority records from headings appearing in bibliographic records
  • Create, edit or use constant data records
  • Perform full record editing
  • Edit authority records from controlled headings appearing in bibliographic records
  • Validate records
  • Submit edited workforms or records for review by LC or peer libraries
  • Add new and replace existing authority records
  • View superseded versions of headings

Chinese Name Authority File

With the Connexion client interface, you also have access to the Chinese Name Authority File to search over 130,000 Chinese name authority records and copy data to paste into bibliographic records. The Joint University Librarians Advisory Committee (JULAC) of Hong Kong creates and maintains the Chinese name authority file, which is expected to grow at a rate of 8,000 to 10,000 records a year.

OCLC Terminologies Service

Do you use additional controlled vocabularies? The Terminologies Service provides single-interface access to often-used thesauri such as mesh, gmgpc, gsafd, lctgm, ngl and dct. It is available to Connexion users at no additional cost.
