OLIB brings new service model to market

For nearly two decades OLIB has served a wide range of health, education, government and corporate libraries with software that satisfies their library management needs. In November, OLIB Web, the new browser-based staff interface to OLIB will be launched, marking the beginning of a new era in OLIB's development. Libraries will now have a system that can be delivered completely as "software as a service".

'Software as a Service' is the term used to describe a model of software deployment where an application is hosted as a service and provided to customers across the internet. By eliminating the need to install and run the application on your own servers, 'SaaS' alleviates the burden of software maintenance. With the launch of OLIB Web, OCLC can now provide a completely hosted solution, removing any requirement for the library to maintain software at their site.

Libraries have for some time been able to purchase OLIB and have it hosted on their behalf at a secure managed environment in Leeds, UK. But access has always been given through a client which required libraries to run third-party software – until now. With the arrival of OLIB Web, all application hosting and software maintenance is completely outsourced, meaning that libraries can truly have their management system move fully to being offered as "software as a service".
