DUBLIN, Ohio, 18 April 2017—The NATO Defense College in Rome has selected OCLC WorldShare Management Services as its new library management system.
WorldShare Management Services (WMS) is the library services platform that offers all the applications needed to manage a library, including acquisitions, circulation, metadata, resource sharing, license management and a single-search discovery interface for library users. WMS also includes a range of reports that helps libraries better understand their activities and track key metrics over time.
As NATO's premier academic institution, the NATO Defense College (NDC) aspires to be regarded as the first choice for nations in the educational development of their senior officers and officials as a respected source of relevant policy-making advice. The Library and Knowledge Centre provides support to the academic and research branches of the College. The Defense College began in 1951 from an idea conceived by General Dwight Eisenhower. It was first located in Paris, then moved to Rome in 1966.
NATSHEL (NATO Sources for Higher Education and Learning) is the flagship project undertaken by the NDC Library and Knowledge Centre. It will create a resource intended to serve as a single portal for researchers involved in NATO studies.
"The OCLC WMS-based NATSHEL Portal will aggregate scientific literature about NATO and make it available to the academic community," said Giuseppe Vitiello, Head, Library and Knowledge Centre, NATO Defense College. "Internally, it will organize resources for different categories of users through shared acquisitions of all NATO libraries. We look forward to launching this resource in 2017."
"We look forward to continuing our work with NATO Defense College to ensure that students and faculty have access to the resources they need to achieve their goals," says Eric van Lubeek, Vice President, Managing Director of OCLC EMEA and APAC. "We believe WMS is the right system to help NDC achieve its mission to 'foster forward and creative strategic thinking on the key issues facing the alliance.'"
Since the introduction of WMS five years ago, more than 500 libraries spanning six continents have selected WorldShare Management Services.
OCLC is a nonprofit global library cooperative providing shared technology services, original research and community programs so that libraries can better fuel learning, research and innovation. Through OCLC, member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services. Libraries gain efficiencies through OCLC’s WorldShare, a complete set of library management applications and services built on an open, cloud-based platform. It is through collaboration and sharing of the world’s collected knowledge that libraries can help people find answers they need to solve problems. Together as OCLC, member libraries, staff and partners make breakthroughs possible.
