ZDB agreement optimizes coverage of Germanic Libraries in WorldCat

OCLC has signed an agreement with the German National Library (DNB) and the Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage (SBB) to collaborate on the exchange of electronic resource data between the Zeitschriftendatenbank (ZDB) and WorldCat, the most comprehensive global network of data about library collections and services.

ZDB is one of the world’s largest sources of journals, magazines, newspapers, serials, and other periodic publications held in German and Austrian Libraries. It currently contains 1.6 million titles in all languages and on all subjects and fields from 1500 up to the present, and offers a total of 12.9 million holdings records.

The data exchange will allow ZDB subscribers to access detailed information on electronic collections and individual title metadata through the WorldCat knowledge base API. At the same time, ZDB data will be made visible and accessible to libraries using WorldShare applications and other applications from third parties that access the knowledge base data from the WorldShare Platform.

The agreement means that library users will benefit from having access to this important content through a greater range of services. Hans-Jörg Lieder, Director of the ZDB in the Berlin State Library, explains, “With this agreement, our information becomes more accessible for our users and the acquisition of digital materials much more efficient.”

“We will clean up various data files and at the same time make every aspect of our work process more efficient,” concludes Reinhard Altenhöner, IT Director at the DNB, which acts as the technical partner of the ZDB.

“The agreement is a perfect example of the way the existing cooperation with regard to print can be further developed for electronic media. This in turn adds to the creation of new partnership models, which we need for the further international cooperation of libraries,” says Norbert Weinberger, Managing Director of OCLC GmbH.About ZDB
