WorldCat Local adds inbound link resolution, visibility of local data, course reserves and more
WorldCat Local now includes integrated inbound link resolution, more visibility for libraries' local data, improvements in known-item searching and more.
New features added in May 2011 to WorldCat Local service include:
Integrated link resolution
OpenURL resolution in WorldCat Local has expanded to include inbound link resolution. Based on data in the WorldCat knowledge base, this feature resolves inbound OpenURL requests received from citation sources outside of WorldCat Local. It complements the outbound linking already available in the service from "View Now" links in search results. The new inbound OpenURL link resolution page uses the same branding (colors, logo), custom links and delivery options that have been configured for libraries' WorldCat Local interfaces.
The OpenURL resolution functionality included in WorldCat Local is based on the OpenURL standard (versions 0.1 and 1.0).
Increased visibility of local data
Local data such as local subject headings, uniform titles and notes now displays to users in WorldCat Local. This additional data complements the full bibliographic data from the WorldCat database already available in the service. Libraries that load their local data via OCLC's Batchload service can take advantage of more visibility of this information now. A future enhancement will add searching of this local data, to give users increased access points to their libraries' resources.
WorldCat Local libraries may now provide access to course reserves through their WorldCat Local sites. Using this feature, user searches will include reserve items found in the WorldCat database as well as temporary items not cataloged in WorldCat.
New search features enhance known-item searching
New search features added in response to user requests will help users more quickly find known items in WorldCat Local library collections.
- "Top 5" relevance sort
When enabled in Service Configuration, a new "Top 5" relevance sort displays the most relevant matches as the first five entries in search results. This will help users more quickly find matches for known item searches in WorldCat Local. Search results after the first five will display in relevance order by "Library and Relevance," featuring materials owned by a WorldCat Local library and related library groups.
- Indication of locally-owned editions
When a selected item is not available or not owned by a user's library, the service now displays information about other locally-owned editions. This gives users the option to select another edition in order to get it more quickly and save potential interlibrary loan costs to the library.
WorldCat.org enhancements that will automatically be available to WorldCat Local users are:
- A Portuguese language interface joins interfaces in English, German, Spanish, French, Dutch and Simplified Chinese.
- An auto-suggest option in the search box.
