OCLC Research and ALISE name recipients of 2014 Library and Information Science Research Grants

DUBLIN, Ohio, 24 January 2014OCLC Research and the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) have awarded research grants to Denise Agosto of Drexel University and June Abbas of the University of Oklahoma; Leanne Bowler, Daqing He, and Jung Sun Oh of the University of Pittsburgh; and Lynne (E.F.) McKechnie of the University of Western Ontario. The awards were presented January 23 at the ALISE 2014 Annual Conference Awards Reception in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

  • Denise Agosto, Ph.D., of the College of Computing & Informatics at Drexel University and June Abbas, Ph.D., of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Oklahoma will conduct user-centered research to develop a rich understanding of teens’ conceptions of online privacy and security attitudes, beliefs, and practices in the project, “A New Role for Libraries: Promoting Teens’ Safety and Security in the Digital Age.” The results of this study will be used to develop guidelines that public and school librarians can use to teach teens to become better-educated and safer users of social media.

  • Leanne Bowler, Ph.D., Daqing He, Ph.D., and Jung Sun Oh, Ph.D., of the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh will investigate teens’ perspectives in the project, “Teen Health Information Behavior and Social Q&A: A Study to Investigate Teens’ Assessments of the Accuracy, Credibility, and Reliability of Health Information about Eating Disorders in Yahoo! Answers.” This project will contribute to the greater understanding of young people’s health information-seeking behavior and the role that Social Q&A plays in the provision of health information for young people.

  • Lynne (E.F.) McKechnie, Ph.D., of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario will seek to capture children’s experiences and perceptions of e-book reading by observing and/or interviewing children between the ages of 2 and 12. The results of the project, “Children’s experiences of and perspectives on e-book reading” will be used to determine if and why e-books for children are important for public libraries to collect and share.

OCLC/ALISE Library and Information Science Research Grants support research that advances librarianship and information science, promotes independent research to help librarians integrate new technologies into areas of traditional competence, and contributes to a better understanding of the library environment. Full-time academic faculty (or the equivalent) in schools of library and information science worldwide are eligible to apply for grants of up to $15,000. Proposals are evaluated by a panel selected by OCLC and ALISE. Supported projects are expected to be conducted within approximately one year from the date of the award and, as a condition of the grant, researchers must furnish a final project report at the end of the grant period.
