WorldCat Discovery now supports staff ILL requests, adds customizable patron ILL request form, remote database option and more

New features in WorldCat Discovery Services provide integrated workflows for interlibrary loan staff using the full-featured search capabilities of WorldCat Discovery. In addition to these staff-specific enhancements, new patron-facing features this month include the customizable patron interlibrary loan request form and the ability to search remote databases. Member-requested enhancements added to WorldCat Discovery this month also deliver the ability to search local holdings records (LHRs) for libraries with the availability option and additional support for non-Latin scripts and serials.

New features added in early August

New features include:

  • Integration with WorldShare ILL
Now interlibrary loan staff can use WorldCat Discovery to search WorldCat and initiate an ILL request in the WorldShare Interlibrary Loan service. Staff with individual OCLC Services accounts set up for access to both WorldCat Discovery and OCLC WorldShare® ILL may use the new "Staff ILL Request" button to connect to WorldShare ILL when they have signed in to use staff functionality in WorldCat Discovery. The request button connects to the holdings display for a particular item, simplifying the process for staff to locate a lending library and make a request.

WorldCat Discovery integration with WorldShare ILL enables ILL staff to benefit from the full-featured searching provided by WorldCat Discovery in a simple, streamlined workflow. This is particularly important because OCLC’s future searching enhancements will occur in WorldCat Discovery; there are no plans to further enhance searching within WorldShare ILL.

"For any library staff member who previously used FirstSearch primarily for interlibrary loan, this new integration provides a compelling reason to begin your library’s transition to WorldCat Discovery, if you haven’t already registered to begin the process,” explains Katie Birch, portfolio director for OCLC Delivery Services.
  • Customization of patron interlibrary loan request form
Libraries who provide patron-initiated interlibrary loan may now customize the ILL request form patrons use in WorldCat Discovery. Almost all aspects of the patron request form can be customized, including instructions, copyright notices and more. Details about customizing a patron ILL request form for use in WorldCat Discovery are provided in the OCLC Service Configuration Guide.
  • Addition of Remote Database Search option
Now libraries who subscribe to collections that are not yet available through WorldCat Discovery’s massive 1.5 billion item central index can make this content discoverable in the same single search box that consolidates access to the rest of their electronic, digital and physical collections. The new remote database search option is available to all WorldCat Discovery libraries for an additional fee. Libraries can request a quotation to add the Remote Database Search option, or any of the other three options that are currently available: Item location and availability, group views and custom reporting.
  • Search local holdings records
Libraries who have purchased the Item location and availability option, which includes all libraries who use WorldCat Local and WorldShare Management Services, can now search LHRs to see library-specific information, such as shelving location, call number, barcode and more.

  • Support for non-Latin script displays
Now searchers who are looking for non-Latin script items will see even more of the bibliographic description in non-Latin script. New elements— drawn from the MARC 880 fields—include Notes, Bibliography, Contents and Summary listings.

  • Support for preceding/succeeding serials entries
For serials titles that change periodically, WorldCat Discovery now helps searchers by showing what the serial title was previously, and what it has now become. This new element is drawn from the MARC 780/785 fields and includes a link to the preceding/succeeding publication entries.

Features coming soon: support for Google Analytics

Features coming soon include enhancements to support libraries who use Google Analytics. This way, libraries can use the analytics tool they already use for other purposes, with WorldCat Discovery.

Start your transition to WorldCat Discovery

The WorldCat Discovery interface is available to all current FirstSearch, WorldCat Local and WorldShare Management Services subscribers as part of existing, current subscriptions. Libraries are encouraged to start their transition to WorldCat Discovery today.
