A beta version of the new user experience for FirstSearch will be available for your use in late February 2013. If your library currently subscribes to FirstSearch, we invite you to begin using this new interface during the upcoming beta.
Your participation in this beta will give your staff the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new interface before its full availability in mid 2013. In addition, you may provide feedback to OCLC that will inform changes to the new interface in preparation for its release to all users. As a beta participant, you may continue uninterrupted use of the service as it transitions from beta to a production service in July 2013.
The new user experience for FirstSearch will expand your users’ current experience with:
- A contemporary look and feel
- Separate views for staff and end-users, providing staff with additional expert search functionality, MARC record views and more
- Adaptive displays for desktop, mobile or tablet use from the same URL
- 170 + million additional article-level citations not currently accessible through FirstSearch
- No authentication required for end-users
Choose the best timing for your library
We will add functionality to the service throughout the beta period, in preparation for full release in July 2013. During this timeframe, we will also make changes in response to feedback from beta participants.
To ensure the best experience for your users and staff, we recommend planning your transition to the new user experience for FirstSearch for after July 2013 if your library:
- Provides user-initiated interlibrary loan requesting
- Uses WorldCat Local
- Uses OCLC WorldShare™ Management Services
NOTE: Browsers required for use of the new service are Mozilla Firefox®, Google Chrome and Microsoft® Internet Explorer versions 8 and 9. We are testing with a variety of operating systems, browsers (including Safari) and devices to provide access on mobile and tablet devices as well as desktops.
Next steps: register your interest in the beta
We encourage you to register for participation in the beta that will begin in late February. Registration is open now at http://registration.oclc.org/reg/?pc=firstsearchbeta
OCLC staff will review your registration and confirm your participation and will send you more information about your next steps. We will accept beta registrations through March 29, 2013.
The beta phase is scheduled to end in July 2013 when the new user experience becomes available to all FirstSearch users. As a beta participant, your library will benefit from uninterrupted use of the new experience upon its full release.
