The following is a blog post from the Spring Hill College’s Burke Library website.
New Library Catalog
Burke Memorial Library has decided to be an early adopter of Web-scale Management Services, developed by OCLC, the world’s largest library cooperative. OCLC’s Web-Scale Management Services (WMS) differ from traditional library systems by offering libraries one unified solution to help streamline routine tasks like purchasing and subscribing to materials and circulating them for cardholders. By moving these functions to the Web, libraries are able to share infrastructure costs and resources, as well as collaborate in ways that free them from the restrictions of local hardware and software. We anticipate extremely positive impacts on our budget, our efficiency, and –most importantly– our students’ use of the library for research and learning.
WMS allows students to access data in a search platform that’s similar to Google in format and speed. It provides students and faculty with access to library held materials and allows them to search a vast pool of information that includes books found in the world’s libraries, half a billion articles and a huge collection of materials from digital and web based archives. The new system will also streamline acquiring and cataloging resources and increase availability and immediacy to sources.
The new library catalog address will be http://shclibrary.worldcat.org. At this date, we are in the process of migrating our old catalog data into the new site. Availability to our users will be begin later this month, and full functionality for staff (acquisitions, circulation, cataloging) will be available in May.
Training for the SHC Community (faculty, staff, students) will begin in June and continue through the beginning of next semester.
The new catalog is possible because of the generosity of the Friends of the Spring Hill Library. Thank you!
