OCLC Global and Regional Councils
One of the most vital aspects of the OCLC Cooperative is the opportunity for librarians to participate in its governance. The Global Council, along with Regional Councils and Board of Trustees, is one of the three governance bodies representing the membership of the cooperative. Global Council comprises Member Delegates elected by the Regional Councils and serves as a key strategic discussion forum and the major communication link between member libraries, Regional Councils and OCLC. Regional Councils are assemblies of OCLC members in their respective regions. They exist to strengthen the cooperative throughout the world and make it easier to participate in its governance.
Global Council comprises Member Delegates elected by the Regional Councils and serves as a key strategic discussion forum and the major communication link between member libraries, Regional Councils and OCLC. Global Council helps shape the future direction of OCLC and libraries by:
- Electing six members to the OCLC Board of Trustees
- Ratifying amendments to the OCLC Code of Regulations and Articles of Incorporation
- Discussing interests of mutual concern and making recommendations to OCLC management and members of the OCLC Board of Trustees
- Ensuring regular and open communication between the Membership and OCLC.
There are three Regional Councils:
- The OCLC Americas Regional Council
- The OCLC Asia Pacific Regional Council
- The OCLC Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Regional Council
Each Regional Council selects a chairperson and administrative officers who, in cooperation with OCLC, plan at least one live Regional Council meeting annually to keep current on issues of vital and immediate interest to the OCLC cooperative. Regional Councils may also schedule additional virtual meetings as needed. OCLC will support these meetings, where all members in the region will be able to participate in discussions, advance ideas and vote on resolutions related to the cooperative. The Regional Councils also elect Member Delegates who will attend the annual Global Council meetings. OCLC looks forward to getting advice and direction from all members through the Regional Councils.
