National Library participation in the OCLC global cooperative
National libraries play a significant role in the global OCLC cooperative. The first international agreement with OCLC was signed in 1978 with the National Library of the Netherlands, and in 1985, the British Library became the first national library outside the U.S. to begin contributing records to WorldCat.
Today, 45 national libraries expose the richness of their collections by adding digital images, national files, bibliographies and more to WorldCat—more than 95 million holdings to date. More importantly, they are sharing information about their countries’ cultural heritages, accomplishments and national identity with Web searchers through WorldCat.org.
