Joyce C. Garnett

Joyce Garnett has 25 years of experience as librarian and library administrator in the public and private sectors. Joyce is University Librarian at Western University (Western) in London, Ontario, Canada, where she is the senior leader for Western Libraries and Western Archives.

Formerly, she was at Laurentian University: initially as Director of the Library, and subsequently as Executive Director of Advancement responsible for Alumni Relations, Communications and Development, and leadership for the University’s Capital Campaign. Prior to Laurentian, Joyce was Area Librarian for Science and Engineering at McGill University, Chief Librarian at Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Reference Librarian in the Medical and Engineering Libraries at McGill.

She has served on the boards of the Association of Research Libraries, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries, the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network; and advisory councils for Swets Information Services, OCLC Canada, and the Depository Services Program (Canada). Joyce played a leadership role in the development of OCUL’s internationally recognized Scholars Portal.

Joyce is particularly interested in the impact of the digital library on research, teaching and learning; in the role of technology in transforming information access and communication; and in the emergence of information literacy as a core competency for the 21st century. She has 25 years of university teaching experience at several Canadian universities in the areas of academic librarianship, scholarly communication, information retrieval, and scientific research resources.

Joyce has served as information consultant for the International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship since 2004 and is a member of the editorial board of the Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, an open access journal published by Western Libraries.
