OCLC EMEA Regional Council Meeting 2013 Programme is announced

BIRMINGHAM, UK, 9 November 2012—The OCLC EMEA Regional Council Executive Committee have announced the programme for its fourth Regional Meeting which will take place on the 26 and 27 February 2013 in Strasbourg, France, with the theme “Dynamic Data: a world of possibilities”. Topics will include linked data, augmented reality and text-mining. Harvard University Fellows Erez Lieberman Aiden and Jean-Baptiste Michelwill present their acclaimed research, conducted on the text of millions of digitised books, which uncovered fascinating new insights about our culture, in a keynote presentation.

Anja Smit, University Librarian, Utrecht University and Chair of OCLC EMEA Regional Council said “The importance of our annual Regional Meeting is that it provides a chance for OCLC members and others across the EMEA Region to come together. This is a wonderful opportunity: let’s not forget that the Europe, Middle East and Africa Region, one of three Regions in the OCLC global cooperative, includes around 2,000 Member institutions and 7,000 organisations using OCLC services.”

The Meeting promises to be even bigger than previous years, with seven parallel member sessions to choose from, as well as a rich and varied programme of speakers.  “We have been overwhelmed by the interest from libraries to present their own experiences to other member libraries,” said Fiona Leslie, OCLC EMEA Marketing Manager. “We are particularly pleased that libraries implementing the new WorldShare management services have stepped forward as we know that there will be great interest in their observations.”

For libraries finding out about the programme for the first time, it is not too late to get involved.  OCLC are offering poster sessions this year, so that representatives of libraries can talk about their own innovations with data.  Submissions are open and can be made here.

There is also an enrichment programme accompanying the Meeting, with visits to the region’s finest libraries.  Prior to the Meeting, libraries can receive a guided tour of the European Parliament and on day two, there will be a visit to Mediathèque André Malraux. And for those of wishing to extend their stay, there will be a wonderful opportunity to visit the Bibliothèque Municipale in Colmar where a guided tour in English will be given of its 15th and 16th century unique collections.

The Meeting is open to all libraries and cultural institutions.  More information on the programme and registration can be found at: www.oclc.org/content/go/en/emearc-mtg-2013.
