OCLC and partners make your summer reading program more social

OCLC has recently collaborated with a number of WorldCat partners—including DOGObooks—to give librarians a free, easy way to enhance their planned summer reading programs with an online social component.

The special OCLC Summer Reading Web site provides a central place for librarians who serve both children and adult populations to find specific partner site activities and curated information from WebJunction, the OCLC-sponsored learning place for public libraries. For children and young adults, the largest Web site dedicated to kids' reading and book reviews by-and-for children, rewards both kids and schools for reading and reviewing books. The four-month online DOGObooks Summer Reading program launches this week during Children's Book Week and runs through mid-September.

With the help of its children's book publisher partners, DOGObooks has assembled an online catalog of 84 popular titles of books for grades 3-8. By reading and posting 3 reviews of 25 words or more on DOGObooks, kids will receive their choice of a free book from more than 100 prize list titles selected from the leaders in children's publishing. With more than 4,000 books available, participating children have a good chance to win at least one book. Better World Books is also awarding a 20% coupon for reviewers, plus a prize of 200 books each for the top ten schools with the most reviews.

Participating publishers in DOGObooks summer reading program include Amazon Children's Publishing, Chronicle Books, Disney Publishing, DK Publishing, Egmont, HarperCollins Children's Books, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Little, Brown and Company Books for Young Readers, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, Papercutz, Penguin Young Readers Group and Random House Children's Books.

MetaMetrics® offers the free "Find a Book" search tool, which helps connect readers at all levels with books appropriate for their interests and reading ability based on the popular Lexile Framework® for Reading. Popular to prevent "summer loss," or the idea of students slipping in their reading abilities, the Find a Book site directs readers to enter their Lexile measure or grade. Once they find the level-appropriate books they're interested in, they connect to libraries through and check for availability.

For adults

Goodreads continues to provide library group pages as a great way for libraries to tap deeper into their local communities--and gain visibility where readers are, online. As the world's largest site for readers and book recommendations, Goodreads can help you promote your events and programs for adults this summer.

"OCLC's activities around summer reading have been designed to make it easy for public libraries to connect with their readers online," explains Cindy Cunningham, Director of Partner Programs at OCLC. "We know that summertime is a highly visible time for the library, and we want to support their efforts through partnerships with DOGObooks, Lexile, Goodreads, Yelp and others."

Libraries can continue to increase their visibility this summer by claiming their library through the OCLC Library Spotlight program, which helps libraries appear in local mobile applications such as Yelp! and others. The cooperative will continue to find partners for library syndication, on behalf of member libraries.
