Course description

FirstSearch is used by patrons, reference staff, and ILL practitioners to locate bibliographic resources. This half-day course will introduce students to basic, advanced, and expert search techniques.  Students will also be introduced to the FirstSearch interface, customization options, direct request, and My Account options. Also covered is how to cross-search in up to three databases at one time, sort and limit the search results, use advanced search features such as index and subject headings lists, and locate appropriate Internet resources.

Online workshops use WebEx, an easy-to-use virtual meeting technology. Attendees will receive as part of their confirmation the necessary logon information, links to course materials and telephone number (used for the audio portion of training). This confirmation will be sent out prior to the workshop

What you will learn

You will learn searching tips and techniques using the new interface, how to cross search in up to three databases at a time, and how to locate appropriate Internet resources. You will learn to customize FirstSearch in meeting the needs of your users and staff, setting defaults for library holdings screens and search levels, and creating custom groups and custom topics.
