What is the difference between 782.26-28 Specific solo instruments with orchestra and 786-788 Specific instruments and their music? When Yo-Yo Ma performs with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, should I use 784.274 or 787.4? What if he performs with one other instrument? With several other instruments?
The distinction is what instrument or ensemble is playing the musical score. In 784, the ensemble is the orchestra or band. For these ensembles, more than one person plays the same score. In the case of a symphony, for example, all of the cellists have the same score.
In 784.25-784.28, the orchestra is joined by one solo instrument; if a cellist, the number would be 784.274. In 785, the ensemble has more than one performer, but each performer has a different piece of music. For example, in a string quartet, 785.7194, there are four scores: one for the cellist, one for the violist, and one for each violinist. In 786-788, a solo instrument (or an instrument plus a piano) produces the music; if a solo cellist, the number would be 787.4.
It helps to visualize the piece of music being performed. If Yo-Yo Ma is on the stage by himself or with only a piano, the work is classed in 787.4. If Mr. Ma is a member of a small group of musicians, then the work is classed in 785. If there is an orchestra behind him, the work is classed in 784.274.
