CONTENTdm Featured Collections: February 2008

Organizations worldwide are using CONTENTdm® Digital Collection Management Software to create thousands of outstanding digital collections and to provide easy access to their unique holdings.

This month, three collections from the CONTENTdm Collection of Collections are featured on the CONTENTdm Web site. The featured collections for February are The Jack Rabin Collection on Alabama Civil Rights and Southern Activists, Missouri Valley Special Collections Digital Gallery and African Americans Seen Through the Eyes of the Newsreel Cameraman.

This collection is a compact but highly complex, multi-layered compilation of documents, sound recordings and visual images. It includes copies of records of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA), many hours of oral history of the renowned civil liberties lawyer Clifford Durr, an undated filmed interview of Stokely Carmichael, 450 photographs created by the Subversive Unit of the Investigative and Identification Division of the Alabama Department of Public Safety and surveillance tapes preserving speeches made by leaders of the civil rights movement.

The Missouri Valley Special Collections (MVSC), which came into existence in 1960, consist of the non-circulating local history and genealogy resources of the Kansas City Public Library as well as the Library’s archives. More than 11,000 images of archival material such as letters, photographs, postcards, advertising cards and maps were migrated from a former SQL-designed online database to the new CONTENTdm Missouri Valley Special Collections Digital Gallery.

African Americans Seen Through the Eyes of the Newsreel Cameraman is an exhibition of films from the Newsfilm Library's Fox Movietone News Collection. From 1919 to 1963, the Fox News and Fox Movietone News camera crews covered the people and events of the country and the world. The resulting imagesmost of which still exist as camera negatives in the Newsfilm Libraryprovide an unparalleled opportunity to glimpse the world through their eyes.
