Libraries use the Local Holdings Maintenance service to create Local Holdings Records that enable them to share detailed holdings information with library staff, users, and other libraries. The Local Holdings Maintenance service helps you maintain accurate, current holdings information. The service supports individual and consortial resource sharing, collection development and acquisitions activities by providing your library's detailed holdings information for materials in any format, including serials.

Local Holdings Maintenance supports collection development activities by making all aspects of the collection known. More accurate results are reported when the entire collection is visible during collection analysis and comparison activities.

The service provides a comprehensive view of a library’s collection so that local and remote library users and staff can determine whether your library holds an item.

How it works

  1. Use the Connexion browser to add local holdings at the same time you catalog an item.
  2. You can also use OCLC’s Batch Processing Service to upload your local holdings records in batch.

Make your library's Local Holdings Records accessible through WorldCat

  • Local Holdings Records reside in WorldCat, the world’s largest bibliographic database. As a result, your Local Holdings data is available to libraries around the globe. Your library’s Local Holdings information is also available to libraries and their users that are using the service. Library users also use OCLC FirstSearch, the online reference service, to see which libraries own an item.
  • Local Holdings Maintenance enables you to share your library’s detailed holdings information with your library users, staff, and other libraries to support resource sharing activities  
  • In addition to serials, Local Holdings Records can be created for all types of materials, helping libraries make the most of the investment in their collections to support collection development activities.
  • Maintaining Local Holdings Records provides information about your library’s detailed holdings as well as lending and reproduction policies. This information increases resource sharing efficiencies by enabling borrowing institutions to target resource sharing requests.
  • Information in the Local Holdings Record can also be used to supply favorite lender information as part of the custom holdings process in WorldCat Resource Sharing.
  • Deflection policies set in Local Holdings Records are used by WorldCat Resource Sharing to deflect requests.
  • By making all aspects of the collection known, it also supports cooperative collection development.
  • WorldCat local holdings records conform to the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data.
  • The service enables you to attach your Local Holdings data to bibliographic records created and maintained by national libraries and CONSER (Cooperative Online Serials Program) participants.

Update Local Holdings two ways

The Connexion browser interface makes it easy to add a Local Holdings Record at the same time you're cataloging an item. You may also upload Local Holdings Records in batch through the Local Holdings Update service.

Helpful metrics

Local Holdings Maintenance statistics offer a detailed electronic report of your monthly use of the Local Holdings Maintenance service, and are available through the OCLC statistics Web site. The reports include information about online edits to Local Holdings Records and are sorted by Creates, Modifications and Deletes.

The OCLC Union List Strategic Report gives you a jump start on entering your Local Holdings data by providing a list of serial titles requested from your library via interlibrary loan. Delivered as a comma-delimited file, the report can be easily imported into your favorite spreadsheet or database program, and is available on the Product Services Web site.

The Local Holdings Offline Product enables you to review your local holdings records and identify necessary changes using a tab-delimited text file that is available at no additional charge. Simply order it online. You will receive an e-mail message that notifies you when the file is ready for downloading. You can then import it into a spreadsheet and view, sort, format and print the data
