JPEG2000: displaying large formatsUse the CONTENTdm JPEG2000 Extension to create and display large format images. In the CONTENTdm workflow the JPEG2000 Extension enables collection builders to convert full resolution TIFF and JPEG files to JPEG2000 files during the import process. Existing JPEG2000 images can also be imported into CONTENTdm. The CONTENTdm JPEG2000 Server supports dynamic decompression and display of JPEG2000 images for efficient viewing of large files without the need for browser plug-ins. Images are presented to users in a standard Web browser with zoom and pan toolbar features. Users benefit from higher quality, detailed images without spending a lot of time waiting for large images to be transmitted. JPEG2000 is ideal for image archives, maps, drawings, medical images, and other large image formats requiring high compression efficiency and image quality.

JPEG2000 provides exceptionally high quality images at low bit rates, overcoming many of the limitations of the original JPEG standard. The original JPEG standard was developed 15 years ago, but advances in technology and research have resulted in a new standard capable of doing much more than simply making digital image files as small as possible.
