Connecting collections to WorldCat

The collection and item level descriptions of a library’s valuable, single copy special collection materials can now be directly and automatically added to the OCLC WorldCat catalog.

How it works

  1. Special Collections are created and uploaded to the local CONTENTdm server.
  2. Local CONTENTdm Web site is implemented and provides end user access through this site.
  3. Collection administrator registers selected CONTENTdm collection(s) with WorldCat.
  4. A first batch is harvested, converted and allowed to be viewed.
  5. When collection administrator approves the converted record it is added to WorldCat.
  6. The CONTENTdm Multi-Site Server Harvester at OCLC regularly harvests registered collections and passes the data to WorldCat for batch loading.
  7. Both collection level and item level data are uploaded to WorldCat.
  8. Registered collections are now available through both WorldCat and the organization’s local site.

Benefit

Links users’ unique special collections with other libraries around the world so collection listings become a part of WorldCat’s 108 million record global catalog. Converted batch loaded WorldCat records can be downloaded to the local cataloging system and OPAC. While the descriptive metadata for each item is added to WorldCat, each individual item is served from local servers, so collection owners retain complete control.
