I thought that unless given special instructions, you do not use two standard subdivisions. But there are lots of exceptions, aren't there?
It's true Dewey instructs you not to add one standard subdivision to another unless specifically instructed; however, in the following cases, this is allowed:
1) With standard subdivision --04 when it is specifically set forth in the schedules, and follow the instructions at --04 about adding other standard subdivisions --01-09.
2) With standard subdivisions that have changed or extended meanings, like encyclopedias on educational psychology 370.1503. (In contrast, the encyclopedia subdivision is not added to the true standard subdivisions nearby, e.g., not to psychological principles of political science 320.019.)
3) Under standard subdivisions --08 and --09, certain other standard subdivisions that are lower in the table of preference are specifically provided. For example, the number for encyclopedias on hospitals in Great Britain is 362.11094103. Although the geographic facet (--09) is higher than the encyclopedia facet (--03) in the table of preference, provision is made under --093--099 in Table 1 for further subdivision by selected standard subdivisions, including --03.
4) With standard subdivision concepts displaced to nonzero numbers (usually for geographic treatment), the full range of standard subdivisions is applicable, e.g., management of penal institutions in Great Britain 365.941068. In contrast, management of hospitals in Great Britain is classed at 362.11068.
