Do I use 730.944 or 730.92 for a book on the works of French sculptor Rodin? Is 730.944 reserved for books on collective French sculpture? If so, how do I gather together books on Rodin?
Because both 730.92 Persons treatment of sculptors and 730.944 Sculpture from France have the regular meanings of Standard Subdivisions --092 and --0944, the table of preference at the beginning of Table 1 is applied. That table indicates that notation --092 is preferred over notation --093-099. Thus, works about an individual sculpture are classed in 730.92, not with the notation for the country that the sculptor is from. However, you are correct to suspect that 730.944 is preferred for books on collective French sculpture; the note at 730.9224-730.9229 states that works of more than one sculptor are classed in 730.94-730.99, e.g., 730.944 works of more than one French sculptor. In addition, 730.94-730.99 is used for sculpture from a specific place, e.g, 730.944 sculpture from France.
