Innovative trends in Resource Sharing

Our fellow librarians share their innovative practices in resource sharing.

  • Paula Braun, National coördinator for Seek&Book at VOB, The Dutch national association of public libraries
    Paula Braun is a professional librarian, worked for over 12 years in the public library of The Hague (The Netherlands) at several departments. In 2001 she moved to Montreal (Canada) to work for a LMS Supplier (Bibliomondo) and was product manager for the LMS Concerto and their OPAC application Zones. Later she worked for all European offices of Bibliomondo, within Europe. In March 2005 she started as National coördinator for Seek&Book at VOB, the Dutch national association of public libraries.
  • Ed Rivenburgh and Cyril Oberlander, Library Director and Associate Director, Milne Library, SUNY College at Geneseo
    Ed Rivenburgh is currently Director of the Milne Library at SUNY Geneseo and came up with the idea of the Information Delivery Services (IDS) project. SUNY Geneseo and the IDS project are winners of the first Rethinking Resource Sharing Innovation Award. The IDS Project was recognized for designing rapid access to more than seven million volumes for 140,000 students and 10,000 faculty members. The project was developed by a team at SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library and currently serves 27 academic libraries in New York, both public and private.
  • David Millikin, Product Manager, Library Logistics, OCLC
    David Millikin earned his B.S.B.A. at Ohio State in 2000 with a double-major in Transportation and Logistics and Operations Management. As Product Manager for Library Logistics, he is currently developing new home delivery and storage management solutions for libraries and hopes to develop broader-reaching logistics services while working with OCLC. David talks about the Cooperative Collection Management Trust (CCMT), group of institutions connected by the need to reduce the costs and footprint associated with physical storage and management of print materials while maintaining access to the content.

Best practices in cooperative virtual reference: management tips for a successful service

Our panelists manage large multi-type cooperative virtual reference services, providing 24/7 reference help to populations numbering in the millions. Learn the tips and techniques that these experienced statewide coordinators use to promote their service to both end users and stakeholders, and how to effectively manage cooperative services staffed by a variety of libraries. The speakers will discuss sustainability issues as well, including recruitment and retention of participating libraries. There will be time for discussion so bring your questions and comments.

Julie Strange is Operations Supervisor, Maryland AskUsNow!, the statewide VR service in Maryland. AskUsNow! has been a participant in the 24/7 Reference Cooperative since January 2003 and is provided by 19 public library systems, 11 academic libraries and 3 special libraries including two law libraries and the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

Beth Cackowski is Project Coordinator for QandANJ.org, New Jersey’s 24/7 Statewide Virtual Reference Service, Beth’s current professional focus is on digital services and the Millennial user.

Mark Beatty is Training and Automation Librarian for Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS) and is the current elected President of LITA, the Library and Information Technology Association division of ALA. At WiLS he serves primarily as trainer and consortial wrangler for InterLibrary Loan, eBooks, and Virtual Reference services. He is the Administrator for AskAway the Wisconsin state wide virtual reference multi-type consortium.

Local Holdings User Group Meeting

This virtual meeting is a rerun of February 7’s, and will present the same guest speakers to discuss the many aspects of Local Holdings and how it can benefit you and your library. An update on OCLC Local Holdings will also be presented.

Guest speakers will include:

  • Jennifer Kuehn from the Ohio State University will present her library’s results after taking advantage of Local Holdings Records to set copy/loan bytes for special collections.
  • Judy Murran from OCLC will talk about batch updating of Local Holdings Records.

Promoting virtual reference services (beyond bookmarks)
Virtual reference services reach out to bring the library to the user, and the most successful promotional activities go where the user is to promote these services. This Web session featured two of the most innovative publicity campaigns for virtual reference services:
  • Beth Cackowski (project coordinator of New Jersey's statewide service QandANJ.org) spoke about the QandANJ.org ad on MTV; and
  • Diana Sachs-Silveira (project coordniator of Florida's Ask a Librarian service) discussed "The Director's Chair", a YouTube contest in which Florida high school students produce a commercial for the Ask A Librarian service.
