OCLC establishes strategic partnership with Sustainable Collection Services

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA,20 January 2012 – OCLC has established a strategic partnership with Sustainable Collection Services, LLC, an organization founded by the principals of R2 Consulting, that leverages WorldCat Data to help libraries intelligently manage their print monograph collections.

Sustainable Collection Services (SCS) makes use of the WorldCat Search API to provide decision-support for collection assessment, deselection, and shared print projects. The firm's data-driven services enable carefully-managed drawdown of low-use print monographs while supporting resource sharing and print archiving efforts.

The SCS service leverages WorldCat data, the largest aggregation of bibliographic data in the world, as a primary source for deselection metadata. Access to this data is enabled by the OCLC WorldShare Platform, which exposes OCLC's Web services and data for use and reuse by third party partners.

This strategic partnership reflects OCLC's commitment to provide broader access to the Platform environment and WorldCat data. Partners like SCS can take advantage of the same infrastructure that OCLC uses to build and maintain its own services, providing libraries with an extended range of application options that take advantage of the same core data.

The SCS service will complement current OCLC offerings to help libraries analyze their collections, joining WorldCat Collection Analysis and a wide range of reports that are currently available using the OCLC Stats.org tool.

"OCLC's work with Sustainable Collection Services illustrates the value of building partnerships in service to libraries using the OCLC WorldShare Platform," said Chip Nilges, OCLC Vice President, Business Development. "OCLC considers all types of partnerships that add value to the library community. Working with WorldCat, Sustainable Collection Services is better equipped to make the right recommendations for libraries and their lending partners."

"WorldCat holdings data is central to a well-coordinated print management project," notes Rick Lugg, President of SCS. "Responsible deselection relies on knowledge of the collective collection, and WorldCat is the single best source for that information. OCLC has been enormously helpful during our first year of operation, streamlining access to library holdings through its WorldCat API. Our strategic partnership builds on that foundation and broadens the scope of our collaboration, enabling SCS to develop an innovative collection analytics application. My partners and I at SCS look forward to exploring the full potential of the OCLC WorldShare Platform."

Sustainable Collection Services was formed just over a year ago. In the first year of operation, it has worked with more than a dozen academic libraries and consortia across the country to consult on print management strategies, and to generate withdrawal and preservation candidate lists based on library-defined criteria.

About Sustainable Collection Services LLC
Sustainable Collection Services (SCS) provides tools and advice to support data-driven deselection of monographs. Founded in January 2011 by Rick Lugg and Ruth Fischer of R2 Consulting, along with partners Andy Breeding and Eric Redman, SCS focuses on collection analytics. The company's services enable libraries to analyze circulation and holdings data, and to generate actionable title lists for withdrawl, storage, preservation, and shared print archiving. (www.sustainablecollections.com)

About OCLC
Founded in 1967, OCLC is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing library costs. More than 72,000 libraries in 170 countries have used OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend, preserve and manage library materials. Researchers, students, faculty, scholars, professional librarians and other information seekers use OCLC services to obtain bibliographic, abstract and full-text information when and where they need it. OCLC and its member libraries cooperatively produce and maintain WorldCat, the world's largest online database for discovery of library resources. Search WorldCat.org on the Web. For more information, visit the OCLC website.

New data elements and new place to manage your WorldCat Registry information

The update, create and share functionality for WorldCat Registry records has moved to OCLC Service Configuration.

With this move, the more than 100,000 worldwide library profiles at http://www.worldcat.org/registry/Institutions/ become view-only. Authorized users can now go to OCLC Service Configuration to update or create their library's WorldCat Registry information.

Single place to manage institutional information

With this move, you can now maintain institutional information such as contact details and online catalog links in a single place—OCLC Service Configuration. The move to Service Configuration can help streamline your efforts to maintain data and supports OCLC's strategic move to a new platform-based architecture in which WorldCat Registry information and other data services can be surfaced in multiple ways.

It represents one less interface you have to learn and bookmark. It also represents one less interface the cooperative needs to maintain, which saves member resources.

Additional data elements added

In addition to the move, there are also new data elements available in the WorldCat Registry. These new elements help support OCLC Web-Scale Management Services and mobile-specific functionality, including:

New types of addresses to designate for a shipping address versus a location address

Time zone settings

Open hours, including normal hours and special hours

Additional options to designate availability for your online catalog, such as "Available online, intranet only or not available externally"

Additional functionality added

There are new feature enhancements also now available, such as the ability to:

Prevent duplicate entries for your institution

View Registry records on a map and correct longitude and latitude

View a listing of all authorized users for your institution

View and update branches and affiliations on one page, and automatically relate records to each other

Detect IP address duplicates

There are some minimal changes to the WorldCat Registry APIs in terms of schemas and XML outputs. Find detailed information about these changes on the OCLC Developer Network blog.

Libraries who do not already have an authorized WorldCat Registry account can request a login to OCLC Service Configuration by following the instructions at Implement your library's enhanced access to its licensed content.

The WorldCat Registry is a free service for the library community, provided and maintained by the OCLC cooperative. With information about more than 100,000 libraries worldwide, the WorldCat Registry helps raise visibility for libraries on the Web. All libraries, regardless of OCLC membership status, are encouraged to view and update their information.

WorldCat Search API February enhancements

The WorldCat Search API was enhanced in February 2011 with additional options for a single editions or records in Dublin Core XML.

Details of these two enhancements:

Get library locations for a single edition, instead of for the entire work

The frbrGrouping SRU parameter has been available for a while as a way of getting search results to include an entry for every matching edition, rather than grouping this into related FRBR groups (the default). It is now also available for API requests for library locations. Use the parameter “&frbrGrouping=off” to get locations for just the edition identified by the OCLC number or ISBN in your request.

For more information see Library locations

For more information see Library Catalog for a Record

Single bibliographic records now available in Dublin Core XML

Single bibliographic records are returned in MARC XML format by default. The “recordSchema” parameter can now be used to return the record in Dublin Core XML instead.

For more information see Single records

Developers everywhere are encouraged to exercise their creativity to create new apps and mash-ups that make use of WorldCat data through the WorldCat Search API, WorldCat Basic API, building WorldCat.org links and other WorldCat widgets.

OCLC Web Services continue to offer ways to connect people with knowledge through libraries, and for libraries to reap the benefits of library cooperation.
WorldCat.org traffic partner BibMe helps students save time on bibliographies

OCLC welcomes a new partner, BibMe, to its growing list of WorldCat.org traffic partner sites. BibMe is an online automatic citation creator that supports MLA, APA, Chicago, and Turabian formatting.

The free site started in May 2007 as a student project at Carnegie Mellon University, and has since grown to have more than 1 million registered users, with more than 7.8 million bibliographies and 25.5 million citations generated to date. It now uses the data in WorldCat, made available through the WorldCat Search API, to fill in citation information for books. The service’s auto-fill feature also provides information automatically for magazines, newspapers, websites, journals, and films.

“Now that we’re pulling in data from WorldCat,” says co-founder Kevin Liebler, “our ability to pre-populate citations with our auto-fill feature has gone up tremendously. Our partnership with OCLC to use WorldCat data has greatly enhanced a student’s ability to generate a complete and accurate bibliography—quickly and easily. Our users benefit from the cooperative efforts of the world’s libraries by having the information provided for them instead of having to find it themselves.”

BibMe uses WorldCat and other databases such as FindArticles to quickly fill citation information. It then formats and compiles a bibliography according to the guidelines of whichever style manual the user selects. Manual entry is also an option.

BibMe is one of several automated citation applications that include library data pulled from WorldCat. EasyBib is another site that uses WorldCat data, in addition to the built-in functionality available on WorldCat.org that exports to popular citation software packages such as RefWorks, EndNote and EasyBib.

The WorldCat Search API is available to anyone interested in creating noncommercial Web sites, mash-ups or mobile apps that include library data. Third party sites like BibMe use the WorldCat Search API through partnership agreements.

Citavi becomes WorldCat traffic partner

OCLC is pleased to announce that WorldCat is now among the online catalogs available to search, cite and annotate in Citavi projects. As such, Citavi has recently been added to the list of WorldCat.org traffic partners.

Citavi (which in Latin means “I cited“") was created by the company Swiss Academic Software and has become a leading product in the German-speaking world. The recently published version 3 provides both a German and an English interface.

Swiss Academic Software CEO Peter Meurer shared, “We are thrilled to add OCLC to the online resource providers available in Citavi. As the world's largest bibliographic database, WorldCat offers Citavi users a truly unparalleled resource.”

The software assists with reference management and knowledge organization. More than simply a citation manager, Citavi provides all the tools necessary for scholarly writing and research such as searching online resources, creating essay outlines and even a project task planner. It helps a user find, structure and then document the information they find—quickly and easily.

Now that more than 210 million records from WorldCat are available to search directly through Citavi thanks to the WorldCat Search API, students and researchers can find more of the world’s information in libraries more quickly and use it more effectively. Citavi also searches more than 4,000 additional library catalogs and specific databases.

Citavi is available for students and researchers at almost all universities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland but is also used by companies and individuals outside the university setting.

About Swiss Academic Software
Swiss Academic Software was founded 2004 in Zürich, Switzerland. The company develops solutions for an individual information research, information management and knowledge organization.
