OCLC Library Technical Services to provide Edmonton Public Library with custom cataloguing of 24 000 foreign language titles

OCLC Library Technical Services (LTS), the custom cataloguing division for Canadian libraries, has announced that it will provide Edmonton Public Library with the cataloguing of 24 000 foreign language titles over the next two years.

Of the total 24 000 records, 8 000 were previously purchased titles in Chinese. Edmonton Public Library will purchase an additional 8 000 titles in 2008, and 8 000 more in 2009. OCLC estimates that 25 percent of the 24 000 titles will require original cataloguing. The remaining titles will be customized—edited or improved according to international standards—and altered according to the institution’s specifications.

OCLC will also catalogue additional foreign language titles currently existing in the library’s collection because its OPAC system does not support non-Roman characters. Edmonton has historically contributed its contents to OCLC’s WorldCat, the world's largest and most comprehensive catalogue with more than 100 million bibliographic records. As a result, the addition of these 24 000 titles will continue to enhance the visibility of the library’s collection globally.

To date, OCLC in Canada has provided custom cataloguing services in multiple languages to several private, corporate, cultural heritage, academic and public institutions, including Surrey Public Library (Panjabi titles) and Vaughan Public Library. Vaughan Public Library’s cataloguing included titles in English, Chinese, Russian, Ukranian and more.
