Review the minutes of the February meeting.

- Brian will talk with Paul to see if CALUPL can review the membership benefits.

Updates on the "Action Items".

They had already been addressed and provided to the delegates soon after the February meeting.

OCLC Canada Members Council election update.

Ernie Ingles has been re-elected for a second term of three years. Bill Maes is the new alternate delegate.

Review of Members Council Agenda.

  • Question asked: Has other issues than technology (in link with comfort zone) been considered like moving/changing community and changing roles of libraries in their community. Felt that more research was needed on the part of OCLC to understand how to link people to eContent and the "people" side of the infosphere equation does not seem to have been addressed this year at Members Council.
  • A brief review of the new OCLC objectives was presented. Daniel indicated that OCLC Canada is trying to sign French Quebec publishers to add to the eBooks content collection, have more international content and help meet one of the objectives.
  • The delegates indicated that it is important to keep on adding e-Content from around the world. To that effect, the council asked to share our ideas of type of e-content desired in Canada.
  • Recommend to talk further about eContent for the September OCAC meeting.

OCLC Canada Advisory Council Charter — Renewing delegate(s) and/or replacing/delegate(s) + procedures to recruit.

Claude Bonnelly and Joyce Garnett voluntarily decided to leave the Council. September 2005 will be their last meeting.

  • John Teskey agreed to step down in 2007.
  • It was agreed to ask Bill Maes to replace one of the departing delegates since he has became OCLC Canada alternate delegates to Members Council. Moreover, it was agreed to approach Jean Payeur, Director of the Institut Canadien de Québec, to fill the other position and to assure that francophone and public libraries would have a good representation on OCAC. Bernard Dumouchel will approach both candidates and ask them to join the group for the January 2006 conference call meeting.

OCLC Board of Trustees June 5 th Reception — Who can attend?

Joyce Garnett and maybe Ernie Ingles will attend. They were asked to make sure to represent the "global" perspective.

CLA Conference — OCLC Canada Activities

  • Everybody but Bernard and Claude are going to CLA.
  • OCLC Canada activities during CLA are: update breakfast on Thursday morning, drawing of MP3 player to promote Audiobooks and other prices, WorldCat Collection Analysis session at the pre-conference seminar and a sponsorship for the delegate’s badges is provided to CLA.

Comments received were as follows:

  • Didn’t address fact we are a COOP (An OCLC Canada Library Cooperative) and should start with fact we are a COOP, not the location.
  • Not clear what OCLC Canada is versus OCLC. More of OCLC data than OCLC Canada.
  • No mention of the Advisory Council. There should be.
  • Need more information on multilingualism.
  • Canadian studies, i.e. do not use US studies/dollars.
  • Members have access to, and use of, WorldCat. Why? Should put more emphasis on this. Need to be more generic and then dig into WorldCat benefits.
  • If need more space, reduce the last paragraph "Members influence the future".
  • Members: Reference services "not reference materials (second bullet)
  • Cataloguing. Use "Canadian spelling".

OCLC Canada to offer group purchasing of none FirstSearch databases

  • OCLC Western and CAPCON, two OCLC service centres in US, have been offering group purchasing on numerous none FirstSearch databases for a couple of years already: http://www.oclc.org/western/cooperative/default.htm
  • OCLC Canada was considering this option for its members and users but the limited resources delayed its implementation. In light of recent discussions with representative from Consortia Canada upon John Teskey’s suggestions, OCLC Canada was approached to consider playing such a role in Canada and more precisely take on some subscription negotiated by Consortia. Consequently, this is being gradually implemented with the collaboration of Consortia Canada.

September meeting suggestions

  • Focus on eContent initiatives.
  • Provide an update on virtual reference. What has happened? Where is this going? Share info on how it is being used? How many libraries are using it? Ask library to get "papers" on topic for better background.
  • Open WorldCat (Post on listserv the requirements to be on Open WorldCat).
