OCLC Permissions Software Instructions

OCLC Permissions is an administrative tool for Windows 2000 and Windows XP only. OCLC Windows-based applications require Windows 2000 and Windows XP users to be in the Power Users group to run these applications. This is due to the way these applications write to the Windows registry. Many system administrators are concerned about the security issues with users working in the Power Users group. OCLC Permissions resets permissions to allow any OCLC Windows-based application to run in the Windows Users Group. This program only resets permissions for the following OCLC applications:

  • OCLC Arabic Cataloging software
  • OCLC Cataloging Label Program
  • OCLC CatME for Windows software
  • OCLC CatME para Windows - Edición Español
  • OCLC CJK software
  • OCLC Dewey Cutter Macro, for use with Passport
  • OCLC ILL Micro Enhancer for Windows software
  • OCLC Multiscripts Z39.50 Client
  • OCLC Passport software
  • Searching WorldCat: An OCLC Tutorial
  • Using Interlibrary Loan: An OCLC Tutorial

You will need a valid cataloging authorization to download OCLC Permissions Software.

  1. As local administrator, disable all anti-virus software running and install the OCLC application(s) to be used. You are prompted to reboot the machine at the end of each install so that InstallShield can finish updating system files. When rebooting, log back on as the local administrator. Startup and close each newly installed OCLC application one time before running the OCLC Permissions program. Starting the OCLC application(s) creates several of the keys/files that are modified by OCLC Permissions.
  2. Disable all anti-virus software running because rebooting the machine as instructed in step1 may result in anti-virus software restarting. Since OCLC Permissions must change both NTFS and registry permissions, anti-virus programs interpret this as a possible attack and prevent it from making the necessary changes.
  3. OCLC Permissions must be run from the drive it is to modify. If it is not, all required keys/files are not properly updated. A good place to run the program from is the \OCLCAPPS\ folder (although it can be run from any location on the drive).
  4. Double-click the OCLC Permissions program. A screen listing all relevant OCLC program registry keys and files appears:
    • Read access is shown in the Users Group column for all installed programs.
    • Not Installed displays next to each OCLC application not installed.
Click the Set Full Permissions button. All items listed as Read change to Read/write.
  5. Click Close. Log off as administrator and log on as the user. The OCLC application should now function as if it were in the power-users group.
