Our commitment

Given the amorphous nature of digital assets, it's difficult to imagine users accessing today's Web pages a hundred years from now - or even ten years from now. But thanks to the Digital Archive, Web page components and other digital documents and materials are not only stored and cataloged; they are also preserved for future users, no matter how technology evolves.

From the extensive preservation metadata set with which each digital object is defined, to the migration of media on which bits are stored, OCLC's Digital Archive is a powerful system for storing, managing and preserving digital assets. And we continue to explore new ways of extending these preservation capabilities.

Current bit preservation features include:

  • Circulating backups—on and offsite
  • Ongoing virus and fixity checks
  • Migration of media on which bits are stored
  • Disaster recovery

OCLC is actively developing processes for full preservation of digital assets to ensure complete renderability, regardless of technology changes. This preservation system will likely involve a combination of migration and emulation.

But here's the bottom line: OCLC is working to figure this stuff out so you don't have to—which means you can preserve something almost as precious as your digital assets: Your peace of mind.
