Image-based linking

WorldCat Link Manager implements a technology called image-based linking that is being used by state-of-the-art search engines to dynamically integrate library collections into the search results. Image-based linking allows the end user to immediately see whether a particular journal is available in their library. This is yet another way that OCLC works with leading search providers to connect your library’s full-text to their services.

Information services that offer image-based linking integration include:

What image-based linking does

Image-based linking causes button images like this:

Full Text (button)

to appear next to article citations when full text of an article is likely to be available in a library.

Depending on the WorldCat Link Manager configuration, when users click on the “Full Text” image link, they will be taken either directly to the full text or to an options page from which they can choose an appropriate full text or alternative service.

How image-based linking works

The search engine checks that required metadata (ISSN, etc.) are available.

A request is sent to the link resolver to check if the user is entitled to the full text.

If entitled, WorldCat Link Manager will return a “Full Text” image.

If not entitled, WorldCat Link Manager will return a transparent image.

Scirus screen

When the “Full Text” button is clicked, a request is sent to the link server to access the article.

If not entitled, a transparent image will be returned by the image-based linking and the branded resolver-specific image link will appear next to that transparent image. The user can click on this link to be taken to a resolver-specific entitlements screen from which they can choose an appropriate service.

WorldCat Link Manager’s implementation of image-based linking is quite flexible. Customers can design their own “Full Text” buttons; bear in mind that different search engines may have different size requirements for the returned button images. WorldCat Link Manager can also be configured to send back an “ILL” or “Document Delivery” image in cases where a journal is not availble- ask our support department for details on these customizations.

Advantages of image-based linking

No disappointed users

Image-based linking eliminates the user disappointment caused by presentation of OpenURL-based “Full Text” links when the user is not entitled to the full text. Instead of having to click buttons to find out if an article is available in a library, the user imediately sees the results of the library look-up from with the search result

Non-proprietary technology

This technology is completely open and non-proprietary; in fact, WorldCat Link Manager uses the 1.0 version of the OpenURL standard syntax for its image service.

Fast results

Because button images are retrieved asynchronously from WorldCat Link Manager, there is no waiting for lookups to complete before the result page is displayed. The result: fast results to the user.
