This field contains detailed information on the location of the holdings. In contrast to
field 850, field 851 allows the recording of the full name and address of the holding institution and specific data about the exact location of the item.
The custodian and the owner of a work are usually the same and are recorded in field 851 for these kinds of items:
- Original or historical graphic material
- Three-dimensional artifacts
- Naturally occurring objects
When an item is not at the owner's address, the name of the current custodian is recorded in subfield ‡a and the owner's name and address are recorded in
field 561. If a work was originally commissioned/installed at one site but was subsequently moved to another location, the name of the present site is recorded in subfield ‡b and the name of the original site is recorded in
field 561. |
