773  Host Item Entry (R)

Definition

Information about the host item for the constituent unit in a vertical relationship described in the record. Field 773 enables the user to locate the physical piece that contains the component part or subunit being described. Include in field 773 only those data elements necessary to assist in the identification of the host item (e.g., links to the bibliographic record describing the item and/or descriptive data that identify the host item). For host items that are serial or multivolume in nature, use subfield ‡g to point to the exact location of the component part within the bibliographic item. Printing

Field 773 prints as the first note. The print program supplies In at the beginning of the note. The program also supplies parentheses around the contents of subfield ‡ k and brackets around the contents of subfield ‡s .

The print program supplies space-dash-space ( -- ) between all subfields after subfield ‡ t, i.e., between ‡ t and ‡ b, between ‡ b and ‡ d, etc.).

Non-ISBD records. Field 773 prints in the series position after the physical description. If a physical description is not present, field 773 prints as a separate paragraph after the title area. In addition, the program supplies parentheses around the entire note.

Printing with field 580. Use field 580 to print notes if information in 773 cannot generate an intelligible note or if the display constant In is inappropriate. If you use field 580, use value 1 for the 1st indicator in field 773.
