A note that provides general information for which a specialized note field (i.e., a specific 5xx field) has not been defined. Use for the following kinds of notes:
 
  • Bibliographic history
  • Physical description enhancements
  • Program notes
  • Series statements that cannot be accommodated in 4xx Fields
  • Translation notes

If you are cataloging rare and special collection materials, use field 500 for copy- or institution-specific notes having scholarly or artistic value beyond the local institution. See section 3.8, " Copy- or Institution-Specific Notes and Added Entries," for more information. If the note is about other types of copy-specific and local notes, use field 590 (Local Note) or field 599 (Differentiable Local Note).
